Daily Field Notes #45

in #geopolis8 years ago

Welcome to the 45th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geography: Pressure and our atmosphere. --- Variation of pressure with Altitude!

Original post by @pangoli

Let's consider our friend Sue, and her bicycle on a sunny day. She was about going out to see her friend and she just discovered the rear tyre was flat. So what should she do to revive her bicycle? well, for starts, it obviously needs lots of air to revive, and to do that, Sue's gonna need a bicycle air pump. By simply attaching the air pump to the stem on the bicycle wheel, she forms a passageway for fluids to flow from the pump to the tyre. In a few minutes, Sue's bicycle is ready to roll We live in a world of pressure, and in getting things done, some sort of force must be applied, and energy transferred. We ne...

Geology: Tectonic Plates, Do they represent one of the factors that makes life possible?

Original post by @maurelvys

The earth, formed 4,600 million years ago, is the largest of the rocky planets, not gaseous and until now, the only one that is known to have organic life as we know it. This sphere, called earth, turns out to be the densest, with the most intense magnetic field and the highest surface gravity as well as an abundant amount of water. When our scientists compare the earth with other planets in the universe, they find great differences, even though what is known up to now of their formation processes are similar.

Ecology: Ice To See You: The Mr. Freeze of Microbes

Original post by @effofex

In some ways, the history of civilization is the history of being clever with our food supply. As soon as we figured out how to get more food than we immediately needed, we started thinking up ways to preserve that food. Essentially, we entered into a race with microbes to see who got to eat the excess. We've known for centuries that low temperatures preserves food and . We must've felt pretty clever, but, we didn't know then about , the Mr. Freeze of Microbes, who has been using the cold to get food for millennia, if not longer.

Archeology: Babylonian Mathematics Refers To The Whole Of Mathematics Until Now

Original post by @sward

Tables of trigonometry have been used by the Babylonians for thousands of years. This is evidenced by the discovery of clay artifacts, shaped like books and aged 3700 years, in the early 1900s in southern Iraq by American archaeologists and diplomats Edgar Banks. Babylonia is an ancient civilization located in the central-southern region of Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamian region includes the Sumerians, Akkad, and Assyria. ## Reveals the history of Babylon This area is very important because it became one of the earliest places of human life together in one civilization. The Babylonian population, often called Babylon, has a single written language that they use to study world-related matters around them. The history that the Babylonians were the first to write from left to right and many made many documents inscribed. Babylonian mathematics refers to all mathematics developed by the Mesopotamians who are now Iraq since the beginning of Sumer until the beginning of the Hellenistic civilization. It was named "Babylonian Mathematics" because of the central role of the Babylonian region as a place to learn. Hundreds of plates of clay were found as a source of Babylonian history dug up since the 1850s. The plates are written using a nail-shaped letter. The plates are written when the clay is still wet, and then burned in a furnace or dried under the hot sun even some of them are home-based work. ## The Scientists Reveal the Phenomenon of Plimpton Trigonometry
