Video games that hurt excellent developers

in #gaming7 years ago

Since videogames were born, hundreds of titles have been released on the market, some have a success that become legends, others go unnoticed whether they are good or bad. This is something very difficult to know at the time of its development, this task falls to the person who directs the project, if your game gets fame will be like a famous rock, but oriented to video games.

There are many developers with successful games like Hideo Kojima with the Metal Gear Solid saga or Hironobu Sakaguchi with the Final Fantasy, but what if a famous developer makes a bad decision? Although it sounds a little crazy, the history of video games has shown that fame doesn't last forever.

Next, I'll show you some video games that left their developers totally out of the gaming area, making their fame go completely into a tailspin, even leaving companies bankrupt.

Daikatana - John Romero

One of the most recognized developers, John Romero participated in the creation of DOOM, doing more than 70% of the mapping of levels among other things that gave the key point, making the game became top selling pc gaming.

Besides this, he was also involved in other titles such as DOOM 2, Final DOOM or Quake, however, for different differences between his work group and his big ego made the decision to leave the famous company ID Software to start a new path as an independent programmer, conducting an advertising campaign where he would ensure creating the best First Person shooter of all time.

That's how he promoted the Daikatana videogame, assuring that this experience would be unique and incomparable, he even told his fans that in a short time he could make this videogame, but everything went out of control, it took many years to be able to launch it to the market and he had many problems regarding the creative part of the videogame.

The result was a complete disaster burying the great career of this developer, leaving only for the creation of low budget video games, that's how John Romero being at the top of gaming development came to the subsoil due to a bad decision.

Shenmue - Yu Suzuki

In the golden age of arcade SEGA was the most successful company in those times, their arcade machines were the most used because of their excellent games. One of the people responsible for this was Yu Suzuki, one of the best developers for this type of games, if you remember Afterburner or the classic OutRun was Suzuki who designed these excellent games.

SEGA seeing the fame of Final Fantasy 7 and 8 decides to make a worthy rival who can compete against them, they decide that Yu Suzuki would be the right developer for this task. One of their ideas was to make a JRPG but with elements of the videogame Virtua Fighter, however, this gradually became something bigger.

More creative ideas arose, more money was needed to meet all the expectations of the game, reaching a total of 90 million dollars (including its second installment), a figure quite significant considering that they were late 90's, the end result was a work of art that was immortalized in time.

But if it was a wonderful game, why did it fail? This was not Yu Suzuki's direct fault, it was already a marketing problem and the company SEGA. When requesting such a budget for a video game, they didn't take into account that they didn't have the amount of consoles sold in the world to profit from this video game.

Just to recover those 90 million dollars each user of the Dreamcast had to buy 2 original copies of Shenmue and Shenmue 2, something totally absurd, this turned this wonderful game into a commercial failure and although it did not deserve a little lowered the reputation of the great designer Yu Suzuki.

Daikatana isn't a bad game in my opinion, I played it a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. The problem was more that it was overhyped and didn't really deliver, also when it was finally released in 2000, Half-Life radically changed the landscape for FPS. I think that if Daikatana would have been released in 1997, as initially planned, the reception would have been much more positive.
