Little-known functions of the PlayStation 2
In the history of video games there have been consoles that have marked a before and after, either by some innovation, games, design or massive sales in the market. Although each one has its own historical weight, the fact that some of them have broken the schemes and forecasts of any marketing cannot be removed.
This is the case of the queen in sales, the PlayStation 2. This videogame console since March 2000 has traveled the world giving excellent video games which provided the best experiences to many gamers, becoming one of the best consoles due to its excellent graphics and a catalog of epic proportions.
Two models came out of this game console, the first version which was called "FAT" and the second that is very small and thin called "SLIM", however, its first model has many interesting things which despite so many years many people do not know, some of them can make their Slim version, but this time we will reveal only the FAT version.
Internet connection Using a special adapter
Although this console was not successful in the online game, could connect to the Internet through a "modem" which was introduced in an expansion port, it placed an adapter which allowed the Internet connection either through the Dial-up system or Ethernet. This was eliminated in the Slim version by integrating the ports directly into the motherboard of the console.
Connect Hard Disk
This version has the peculiarity of being able to include a hard disk. In the beginning SONY sold its hard disks with the network adapter or modem because there were models that did not include it. It served for certain games which needed more memory than normal, however, over the years independent developers programmed certain applications which allowed you to exploit the full potential of this feature.
Install and load games via hard disk
Previously it was mentioned that they programmed applications that allowed to exploit the potential of the hard disk of the PS2, one of those functions is the capacity to install and to load games, thanks to this our reader will remain operative by much more time since thanks to this there is no need to use it, everything will load from an application.
In addition, this brings an enormous advantage and is the speed of reading, the games when loaded through a hard disk load much faster, this allows a more fluid experience with any videogame.
Cable iLink PlayStation 2
The term local network has been widely used in computers because many of their games included this feature, but in game consoles is something that began to be seen very slowly. The PlayStation 2 had this function, but in a very particular way, it was through a special port called S400.
In this port we can place an iLink cable that allows us to interconnect two PlayStation 2 to play between them, for example, the game Gran Turismo 3 could play up to 8 players, but to do so you had to play with two PlayStation 2 interconnected, so 4 people played on a console and the remaining 4 on another.
As a curious fact this cable was designed by Apple which was widely used in their computers, always tried to replace the USB port through the iLink cable.

I remember the Gamecube had a bunch of ports on it that I was never very clear what they were for as well. I knew about all the other stuff but had no idea there was a space inside of that thing big enough for an entire full-size hard drive. I would be willing to bet that not many people utilized this feature.
I had both the FAT and slim version. The FAT was stolen and the slim version suffered from disks scratching on the tray while rotating and this eventually made the games unplayable. I don't know what happened to the slim one, i probably gave it away to someone :)
Certainly many people do not know about the function of the hard disk in the PS2, many staff when commenting this are surprised.
Certainly the Game cube also has its interesting functions very little known, soon I will make a post with that content (thanks for the idea =D)
The slim had that little detail with the discs, that was caused by the flex that was inside, there came a time when it played the disc and caused that very characteristic circular scratch on the discs.
Thank you for the comment @gooddream
By the way I'm really digging this journey down memory lane that you are doing lately. I hope you keep it up :)
I am very happy that my content allows you to travel to the past, I have always liked to talk about these things because it is my passion and it is something I like to do in my spare time. Thank you for your support
Wow! Never thought PS2 had these features... To be fair I only played on the Slim version and it was owned by my cousin, not me.
Certainly they are things that with time and curiosity are discovered, I am very glad that through this post you knew about all these functions.
I believe iLink is the same as Firewire (that's just Sony's name for it). It was very popular for digital video back during the MiniDV era. There were two common speeds: 400mbps (which is what the s400 refers to) and 800mbps. Firewire was faster and more reliable than USB until USB 3 came along and could also be used for fast (for the time) networking.
Possibly it's the same cable, the truth is that this was designed by Apple, most likely at some point these companies made some kind of agreement. Thank you very much for your comment @darth-azrael
