Antique Hunting

in #steempeak5 years ago

Greetings Steemian's,

One of my hobbies is collecting antiques. I'm by no means a professional at it, but I like to believe I have an eye for antiques. So I go to thrift stores, where hoards of people pass over gems in plain sight. To me it's a little funny, but also sad that many are unaware of how many antiques there are floating around, or simply don't care.

Maybe it's an indication that I'm a bit old fashion, I'm not sure, but I've always had a taste for fine art and antiques. To me, they go hand in hand. A little cliche, but I'll say:

"They just don't make stuff like they used to."

This is not an opinion really. It's true, in terms of craftsmanship and durability, most things were built more durably in the past, which is why so much good stuff is still floating around. I really like things that are handmade too, and many items of antiquity were made this way, and carry a story with them.

So I went to a local thrift store a few days ago, on one of my hunts. It was rather sporadic and spontaneous, but I know when a random thought comes to futuremind, it isn't random at all, that I'm being directed to something. When I follow this intuition, I am rarely wrong.

I purchased 3 items, for a grand total of $6.08 USD.

Items Purchased:

  • Antique Silver Knife. (In process of researching origin.)
  • Tray that looks antique. (It's not an antique though, just super cool.)
  • Batman DVD. (4 Batman movies.)

Not too shabby, And guess what.... The knife was 0.10 Cents.

Let's check out some photo's, we'll start with the antique.

In a 12x12 inch plastic container, the yellowish hue of this knife jumped out at me immediately. It stood out from the rest like a sore thumb.

As I was walking away from the bin, a man was right behind me walking towards it, eyeing my hand hard. I smiled and said "looking for these?"

IMG_20190612_011223.jpg
I firmly planted it in his hands. He looked at it and said, "Yes, and I'm willing to bet you didn't leave any behind."

IMG_20190612_011246.jpg
"Look for yourself" I responded.

IMG_20190612_011323.jpg
"But it's highly unlikely that I left any behind.."

He looked for all of 30 seconds, and knew that the search was futile at that point. A small part of me felt bad for his close encounter, but hey, that is how life goes, and I have been in his shoes before, so admittedly, I didn't feel all that bad.

My initial thought is this is a late 1800's production, but with the markings, I'm not so sure. They look like they could be a more modern stamp. If anyone recognizes this, and knows what it is, a comment letting me know will save me some time researching.

I'm going to have it appraised for shits and giggles, but this will be something I hold onto forever. It will not be sold.

It's also important to note, that the handle feels hollow. I do not know if this is indicative of newer or older, but if I had to guess, newer.. I'm not giving up hope that it's old though.

Regardless, I doubt this knife is newer than the 60's or 70's, and still an antique in my book. You are not going to buy this knife new today, that is for certain.

So now let's check out this really cool tray.

I knew right away that this is no antique, due to the modern welds, plus the weight.. I'm thinking it's a newer alloy that is used in metal production today.

It's still cool, even though it's not an antique, and it just wouldn't leave me alone! I said nahhhh, I'm not going to buy that, and it said "yes you are futuremind", FINE! you win!

IMG_20190612_011544.jpg
For this price, it's a win.

The last item I bought, was a DVD. I'm not much of a TV or movie watcher, but I enjoy a good flick every now and then, and the earlier Batman movies are among my absolute favorites for sure!!!!

So when I saw this DVD priced at $2.99 USD, there was absolutely no way I wasn't buying it .I know you can download these movies, or stream them, but like I said, I'm a little old fashion in some ways, and I like having physical DVDs. They are phasing out I guess, but still.. I love them.

They have a massive vinyl records collection there too, which I didn't have time to sift through, but you can bet I will be going back, and next time, I will take some pictures of the thrift shop. It's absolutely insane how much stuff they have packed into this place.

So , here is the DVD.

Ahhhh , that's so awesome!!!!

The condition is brand spankin new.. Indicative of the drug problem we have here... This was likely sold to supply someone's habit , sadly, but it's found a good home now, and will be watched with a giant bowl of popcorn!

That's it Steemian's, my little antique hunt. It turned out to be a nice experience. I think I'll start going to this thrift shop regularly to search for hidden gems. I just know there are more in there. Have a great day everyone!

Much love,
@futuremind

I completely agree with you @futuremind "They just don't make stuff like they used to." And I am convinced that a lot of today's products are designed to last just after the warranty period is finished.

I also love to browse antique and second hand stores because as they say, "One man's trash is another man's (or woman's) treasure." 😊

I already knew that. 😉

I'll be posting an update after I have a professional check this out for me. Thank you for stopping by @trudeehunter, It's always a pleasure to see you darling. 💐

Great share here! I can't see the stamp photo clearly. It looks like B B on top of one another. Is that correct?

I just tried everything to get my cell phone camera to zoom better on this, as this is hard to make out with the naked eye, even with intense fluorescent light.

I can say confidently the bottom is definitely a B. The top appears to be a P, but also looks like it could an R or B.

I will need to take this to the local jewelry dealer to have magnified. They have the proper tools. I'm limited and have no way to magnify this myself.

Thank you for taking interest in this. I'm gonna keep you in the loop! This is pretty exciting :)

Please do keep me in the loop. This is what the hunt is all about 👍🤜🤛

Looks like you had a fun time looking around and picking up some items. i really like the knife.

Yes, it was super fun. There is certainly something special about this knife.
How about that for a "random thought" that I should walk into this thrift store!
Thank you for stopping by @redheadpei :)

omg I wondered if that was gonna happen LOL.

Thrift shops are fun! I haven't done done that in a long time.

They are fun, and also addicting! If I ever find myself in your neck of the woods, we'll hit up the thrift store Melinda 😎
