Trying to bring down our carbon footprint with the purchase of a Sodastream!

Last weekend we did buy our first Sodastream. We have no intention trying to make an economical benefit with this, but the idea is trying to bring down our carbon footprint!
The biggest decrease of our carbon footprint is the plastic bottles we do have to purchase! While we try to minimize the soft drinks for the kids we still buy a shitload of disposable plastic bottles per year!
So each bottle which we don’t have to purchase is a blessing for nature! I do know and understand that this is maybe only a spat of water on a boiling plate, but each step in the good direction will result into a win for or environment.
We do have the blessing of course that our tap water has an excellent quality and is neutral from flavor.

Not only we will save the nature from the manufacturing of these bottles but there is more. The bottles which aren’t manufactured don’t have to be recycled, which also has an environmental cost! And on top of that. These bottles needs to be transported and due to their size they do take lots of space in ships and trucks. So also here again, a bottle which doesn’t have to be manufactured, doesn’t have to be transported!

Of course one can argue that this machines have to be manufactured, that they have to be transported, just like the bottles with the syrups and the re-usable cylinders! But one has to start somewhere.
The syrup bottles are of course smaller than a regular soft drink bottle. And one syrup bottle can replaced the transportation of 6 1.5 liter bottles of regular soda! So, yes there is a positive use case for the environment.

But of course it all comes down to the tasting of the sodas!
When we did buy the machine, we bought 2 syrups with it. The Ginger Ale and the Orange (replacement of Fanta). To my surprise they did taste great! Maybe even better than the original products. This is needed so that we do stay motivated to use the machine.

I also did read some articles that the CO2 used to fill the cilinders are more or less a byproduct of other production processes. So we are more or less just borrowing the CO2 before we release back into the air!

Not only we did buy the Sodastream machine but also some re-usable bottles. 2 regular 1l bottles and a smaller 0.5l bottle were in the offer. But we also bought the hipster 1l bottles and 2 smaller 0.5l bottles.

The next step is to try out some different flavors. I am interested in the Tonic, Cola and Lemon (replacement of Sprite which I do like to drink).

And remember every small step we take to decrease our carbon footprint is a blessing for nature and our environment!
Probably in our case it will be a negative economical investment but we do consider it worth it!

Cheers,
Peter

Good luck with the Sodastream! I don't drink much soda myself, but I'm sure it's much fresher, certainly better for the environment, and no more lugging heavy soda bottles home from the grocery store...

Enjoy!

More a !BEER drinker then?
I do enjoy a soda but happy that the kids also do like water!

Hey @braveboat, here is a little bit of BEER from @fullcoverbetting for you. Enjoy it!

We use our Sodastream for years already but we made sure we use one with glass bottles.
The less plastic is used the better we thought.

I didn't want to buy a more expensive model, which can support glass bottles because we have no idea how long we are going to use it. It hope it will become a standard piece in the kitchen.
Glass bottles are indeed even better like you wrote.
Step by step I guess.

Cheers,
Peter

I fully understand - that's why we bought a second-hand model from a couple that was going to divorce and sold their things :)

Good to move away from buying plastic bottled cold-drinks, I was given a second hand one years ago with glass bottles.

This system has lasted over a period of easy thirty-five years, I currently enjoy the water with some fresh lemon juice on very hot days.

Have not bought syrups in many years, it is nice for an odd whisky when needed....
