{playlist} January 2018 Playlist

in #electronicmusic6 years ago (edited)

Your eyes do not deceive you, I've skipped a month. I was spooling up lists based on what I had been listening to in the given month. However, when coming to posting, it looks like I'm running a month behind. So I've taken the rather low tech approach of time travelling my list ahead a month! Same principle though, here is a collection of tracks I've been listening to over the last month. Sometimes old, sometimes new, sometimes chilled, sometimes chunky.

Lord Of The Isles - Sunrise 89

Lead track from his superb six tracker on Firecracker. The full release veers into ambient and downtempo, but this is the bumpiest moment on it. Punchy beats, whistle melodies and dreamy pads. It's all things at once and just wonderful.

YMC - Subway

An old cut from Yoshitoshi from before they went terrible. Smooth, deep and groovy. I listen to this with a tinge of sadness that one of my favourite labels from the millennium veered off into tired dancefloor fodder.

Mark Barrott - Cascades (Francois K Mix)

Mark Barrott leads the way on his eclectic International Feel imprint with some more pure Balearic grooves. Industry veteran Francois K steps in to rework into a chuggy dancefloor heater.

Paul Hester - Subsonic Interference

Unknown to me until now, it seems that Paul Hester's tracks from the late nineties have a bit of a cult following. I went to re-buy the Beautiful World release on Paper Recordings only to find a jacked up price on Discogs. Thanks to re-issues imprint Mint Recordings, this dark and techy groover has seen another run for a brand new generation of ears.

The Mole - Our Time Has Come

Nobody does disco hypnotism (discotism?) quite like The Mole. The simple, pared back groove keeps you bumping along while little snippets like the vocal "I wanna know" drop keep you intrigued.

Pepe - Benzine Electronics

Lobster Theremin sent me a care package of vinyl last year. In amongst it was this release, which had gone under my radar somewhat. Over on the b-side is this stellar piece of breezy electro.

Rolando Simmons - Montignac

I get a little hint of Aphex Twin when listening to Rolando Simmons. At face value, those de-tuned melodies, acid licks and sudden shifts in tone, all point to an obvious synergy. Once you get under the skin, you realise that Rolando has his own charms that keep him distinct from the Cornish wonder.

Objekt - Ganzfeld

Ultra-tight electro funk with orchestral flourishes. This hits the spot immediately.

Lapti / Nocow - Sirenas

From Russian oddities label Gost Zvuk. The combination of Lapti and Nocow here is like a fusion of Burial's frozen nostalgia with Boards Of Canada's penchant for woozy atmospherics.

Pye Corner Audio - Continental Drift

Continuing the woozy theme, Pye Corner Audio's latest release closes out with another one of his awesome ambient vignettes.

That’s some fine selection of excellent music!

Why thank you! Monthly lists from me from now on.

The future, hopefully exclusive fortnightly mixes.

You reminded me to this one

I missed it the first time around! I got it as a gift a few years back. Man I loved that golden Yoshitoshi period. I’m fairly deep in mood recently, so it suits that vibe perfectly. Love an EP that’s consistent from track to track too.

Now you got me going :)
I actually love that groove a lot

You know whats weird. Spotify didn’t work in Bali. I don’t have it but I get it now because of your playlist 😉

2018 is the year I liberate the musical internet for Bali!

I did a little “looking back” post for new year, mentioned I was going to do some label spotlight posts ... but I could dial back to the past and do some retrospectives. So many classics on Yoshitoshi. When the Yoshiesque mix came out, I was blown away.

stealth edit

I better make an archive of my playlists so people can find them easier if they catch on down the line!

Haha, I saw! Steemify app pinged up to say someone was talking about me ;)

Up for a back to back any time!

That Pepe Lemon Fanta record was just excellent.
