Is Inconsistent Medical Advice Commonplace Today?

It has been 6 months, half a year that i've been dealing with an issue with my leg post my accident 2 years ago. If you've never been in any near-fatal accident you'd think body recovers soon but that's not the case. I'm dealing with a couple of major issues and trying to get closer to solving them.

After 6 months of consultations with various physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons i've finally found a solution I can implement. But it's the journey to get this far that's been equally frustrating.

It's the apathy on part of people you rely on to provide good medical care who over a period of time stop trying to find the root cause of your problem and start treating the pain with medication and therapy suggestions which have zero positive impact towards improving your condition.

It's not that there aren't good doctors or surgeons out there but most of them lack the interest needed to dig deep to really improve their patient's health. The world is starting to encourage mediocrity and I can tell you first hand that we've given enough opportunity to breed mediocrity amongst healthcare professionals.

After struggling with specific issues that went undiagnosed for the longest time I got a reference for a physiotherapist in my city from my friend's dad. This man doesn't generally see patients any more as he's the HOD in a top medical college here but he took me in and after an hour long meeting with him I got insight into my issue.

I also visited a different ortho surgeon in my city today who corroborated these new findings and told me the exact injury that's im dealing with currently and the steps I can take towards recovery in addition to what was communicated by the physio.

My goal has been for the past year and half to get back to some kind of fitness training. I used to train regularly prior to the accident and i've missed working out in some form or the other due to multiple surgeries, pain amongst other things being a constant setback.

This could've been diagnosed sooner if the people I've met over these past 6 months paid attention to root of the issue and used their education and experience to derive at a real conclusion instead of simply writing it off as something unimportant. If I had simply believed in them I would've been looking at greater injury today.

I went with my gut feel each time that this is not correct advice until I met the right people whose approach and ability to clinically assess the situation brought the underlying issues in front of me. Doctors are also often ready to simply write pain medications of all kinds as a quick fix and send you on your way.

I've also learnt so much about my own body in the process of dealing with my injuries and attempting a near-full recovery in the past 2 years. It has also taught me so much about the correct ways of dealing with them. But dealing with incompetent doctors is frustrating nonetheless.

I’m pretty sure that many doctors don’t have a complete knowledge about different issues..!!

Yes. That pretty much sums up my experience so far.

yes,I completely agree as I am experienced the same around last year this time. I got sunstroke and consulted a doctor. He just filling the list of tablets in prescription and tests with out looking for clear reasons. Due to extensive use of medicine given by him I got ulcers in mouth and unable to eat or drink. this was went on like two weeks and I lived on only sugar cane juice and basil seeds drink. we changed the doctor but the same thing repeated. So finally I took the things in my hand and injected two saline bottles with the help of my RMP friend. Its just body needed energy rather than medicine,Next day attended office like a boss and had some biryani too :x

That's crazy dude! I'm glad you are feeling better now. :)

I think the problem is that a lot of doctors do not take the time to really inform themselfes about the rare issues that exist. For me something like that happened too. Now that I am getting into studying the human body more and more I see how complex the topic is and how much dedication it needs to keep all the knowledge handy. I am happy we both found our ways to recovery. Best wishes :)

I've been learning this past week and there's so much to learn! I didn't think it would consume so much time but i'm glad im on this process now.

Thank you so much and I wish you the best too! :)

By knowing our own biology we enpower our minds :) And it is fun too. Yesterday I could track my aching to the musculus coracobrachialis. I had no idea this one existed before I started studying them.

simply writing it off as something unimportant

A lot of doctors do this. It was the same in my case. I had been suffering from allegies for 2 years without even know i had them. Everyday i would wake up to a runny nose, itchy eyes and my day followed with countless amount of sneezing. All doctors i went to wrote it off as common cold untill i met one who actually listened to my problem and suggested to take an allergy test. As it turned out i was allergic to 5 commonly found items which i had been in contact almost everyday.

Although my condition wasn't as critical as yours when it happens every single day for two years straight its very frustrating. So yeah...having such incompetent doctors who just hurry to find the most primitive solutions really feels like crap.

Hope you do better now that you've found the right treatment.

Thanks for sharing your experience and for that info. It didn't strike me to get an allergy test done earlier. I've been dealing with that in the past two months and it has been very annoying over and above other issues. Luckily things have settled down a bit lately. Will get it done soon nonetheless.

I'm glad you're recovering and seeking advice from a lot of sources for the best long term recovery plan. We have a friend who has been a nurse for 40 years and she's of the opinion that the modern medical community here in the US relies too much on the internet for diagnoses. She said most young doctors and nurses have been trained to use the the internet as a tool mainly to identify which pharmaceutical drug to prescribe for a certain set of symptoms and many don't think beyond that. I'm sure this isn't always the case but it could explain a lot. I hope you get back to 100% as soon as possible!

Thanks Eric!

It's quite crazy what you're saying but i'm not surprised at all. I was sure I was getting good medical advice all this while, until it turns out I wasn't!

Can't ever forget the day of 9th May 2002.

17 years back I was survived from a fatal accident on my bike against a car when my bike's front wheel was inside the mud guard of the car and my head broke the number plate of the car but luckily Only my right hand was injured inside.

But still in winters I feel ache in my wrist band.

Hope you get well soon @firepower.

Oh that's quite a crazy incident right there! :( I'm glad you made it out just fine.

Always get multiple opinions. Service providers can vary greatly and have very different approaches to problem solving.
