"Return from death" - Episode 2 - Playstation 1

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

Hello steemit crew!
I will always remember that 9:00 PM when my mother forced me to sleep while my father and brother were playing Lara Croft on Playstation 1. More than 10 years passed and I still remember how I hated that moment.
Few days ago my friend wanted to throw away defective Playstation 1, I prevented him because I had one defective in my basement, so I wanted to diagnose the problem and fix it with parts of another if it's possible.

I tried first one. After I hit the switch some strange noise began to hear and it didn't read CD.

I figured out that CD reader is not working and playstation didn't recognize joystick.
So I tried the second one.
While I was plugging power cable I heard electricity as it is short-circuited. So I didn't even want to turn it on.

It was time for dissembling.

Here you can hear sound of electricity :D

So I removed power supply and check it out.

At the first sight I could see that power connector is not soldered right and that's why I heard electricity.
I soldered it again :

After soldering I tested it out and it worked but I knew that I can't fix CD reader on first playstation so I used its power supply just to be sure.

After that I tried to start it up.

It started very well but then it freezed. I waited few minutes but without any luck. I did several restarts but it wasn't helpful.
Next thing I tried was cleaning disc and CD reader with "RAKIJA".

AND IT WORKED!!

So I don't wanna say that alcohol is the best for solving problems but in many cases it helps a lot :)

I put non-fixed playstation in the corner to wait for some new luck and went to play the fixed one.

Do you remember that nostalgic sound?!

Thank you for your attention, see ya in the next episode!

Some say RAKIJA can heal broken bones in a few hours..

My grandfather was drinking rakija every day maybe that's reason why he never broke any bone :)

The old playstations had a problem (used to be well known) of the laser ending up cocked so it stopped reading the cd level. I bet that is what is wrong with that cd reader. If you flip it over you will notice it has a piece that rides on a bar that starts to wear and it doesn't stay at the proper height. I remember being able to rig it back in the day.

Motor that move laser left-right rotates without stopping. When i moved laser physically then it worked for few minutes and than again same thing. I don't know is some part of plastic broken or motor isn't in right place. I will try to fix that when I get some free time. Thank you for advice. I appreciate that !

gamer time my friend???

Nostalgia time..I post everything that i think it will be interesting for steemit community. I love fixing stuff so why not post about it :D
