Wi-Fi: they improve their connection thanks to a simple sheet of aluminum :

Researchers have shown that it is possible to improve the range of a Wi-Fi connection by using a reflector made by 3D printing and covered with a single sheet of aluminum to guide the transmitted signal by the router. An economical solution that can, as a bonus, help secure the wireless connection.

Tinkering with a damaged or insufficiently powerful radio antenna with a sheet of aluminum foil is a well-known trick. It turns out that this rudimentary technique can also help improve the power of a Wi-Fi signal, and even enhance its protection. A team of researchers from Dartmouth College (USA) found that reflectors of various shapes covered with aluminum foil and placed behind Wi-Fi routers help to improve signal strength in a given space by orienting it in a targeted way.

Currently, the main technical solution for optimizing a Wi-Fi connection in a multi-room environment involves the use of directional antennas to focus the signal. But it is expensive and requires a rather complex configuration. The solution mentioned here, called WiPrint, is much simpler and less expensive.

Reflectors can increase the strength of a 6 dB Wi-Fi signal

Researchers have developed software that simulates the propagation of the radio signal in a space and its interactions with the objects it encounters, as well as an algorithm for creating reflector models with shapes that provide optimized coverage. Once the system has the necessary information (area, footprint, location of Wi-Fi access point, areas to cover and exclude), it takes about twenty minutes to produce a reflector model that can then be manufactured with a 3D printer before being covered with aluminum.

According to tests conducted by the team at the University of Dartmouth, reflectors can increase the strength of a 6 dB Wi-Fi signal and reduce it by 10 dB in areas that need to be excluded. The manufacturing cost is estimated at 35 dollars (about 30 euros at the current price). The researchers plan to go further by exploring the use of alternative materials to plastic that would allow reflectors to be made that can automatically adapt their shape as the environment's configuration changes. They will also study the effectiveness of the device with millimeter waves and visible light.

Hi @redouanemez

Interesting stuff, and kind of odd that no one has though of this before. A parabolic disc has been used to focus satellite signals on the receiving end the last 60 years.

Yes and more is much simpler and cheaper. and certainly there will be other things to discover in the future through technology and science that can not be imagined in our day.

Tyskland akselererer utviklingen av den digitale økonomien :

The German government is focusing more than ever on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). On Tuesday, it gathered in Dresden nearly 700 politicians, business leaders and scientists for a new summit on the subject, the fifth since 2006. Reflections and debates focused on the new German strategy for the digital economy ( "Deutschland Digital 2015").

New strategy

Launched a few weeks ago, this strategy aims to accelerate the development of digital technologies and their applications. It has high ambitions: Berlin intends to create 30,000 jobs in five years. It plans to reduce the energy consumption of ICT by 40% by 2013 and support the use of digital networks and tools in SMEs and craft enterprises. In particular, the government wants the development of networks in education, energy, health, environment and transport.

Broadband

Berlin is also continuing its efforts to ensure full coverage of the territory via digital broadband networks. Germany, a few years back in this area, has made considerable progress thanks to the implementation of a proactive strategy. At the end of 2010, 98.5% of German households should have access to the Internet at the minimum rate of one megabit per second. This places Germany among the most advanced countries.

In general, information and communication technologies are becoming increasingly important in the German economy. Germany is the world's third largest market for new technologies, after the United States and Japan. With an annual turnover of over 140 billion euros, ICT is now one of the main economic sectors alongside the automotive, mechanical engineering and electronics industries. They employ 840,000 people, plus some 650,000 new technology experts working in other sectors.

The adoption of a new strategy for the digital economy is, however, not only motivated by the weight of the sector, but also by its future prospects. It also stems from the transversal and strategic dimension of ICT in today's economy: new technologies have become a key factor of competitiveness for the entire economy.

security

The recent release of US diplomatic cables by the WikiLeaks site, however, provided further proof of the importance of Internet security. The subject has also been widely discussed in Dresden. German Minister of Economics and Technology Rainer Brüderle stressed the need to strengthen the security of confidential commercial and administrative data. "Security and trust are rightly of crucial importance to many Internet users," he added.

Hi @redouanemez

Thanks for the interesting news. Germany have had a few bold plans for the future lately. I'm thinking of the ambition to be the world's first major renewable energy economy and the political pressure on the German automobile industry.

With more than 20 years of experience in the promotion of renewable energy, Germany excels in this field by producing ¾ solar electricity from Europe, which has earned it its second world rank in solar energy matter.
At the time when the massive effort of reunification ended its heaviest phase, Germany decided in the 1990s the "exit from nuclear power" as a medium-term goal. The country has therefore considerably increased its efforts on energy efficiency and especially renewable energies, both for reasons of energy security and the fight against climate change but also, which has earned the support of the industry and German unions, for economic and social reasons (creation of activity and employment).

Best wishes,

Håper dette går over snart.

This is a great idea, I always wished I had a way to get back at the scammers and spammers. I have to say I'm really surprised that it took so long for somebody to do something about this. It's a shame that everybody's afraid to click on an email these days!

Hi @Tbnfl4sun
I'm afraid this service is more a gimmick than a solution, we cannot expect this service alone can handle the massive amounts of spam. It does however address the problem and raise awareness in a humoristic way.

Lol!

Troll the trolls.

@Driftnerd
Fantastisk god humor. :)
