Roscioli Caffé. Tasteem review
Last fall we went to Rome, Italy on our honeymoon and found this really cool place called Roscioli Caffè. We were searching for Salumeria Roscioli because a native friend recommended it to us, but Roscioli Caffè found us first.
At first we were a little confused because we were told that this place was a salumeria, kind of a deli, but instead we saw just a little place with only lots of desserts displayed. We asked in our poor Italian for a place to sit and the guy from the counter just pointed to the back of the place.
There was a tiny hall with stairs going down and a narrow entrance to a private room. Inside there was a bar facing to a large table for 10 people. We asked for a spot in the table and they asked us to wait a few minutes.
At that moment we realized this place was too fancy for our tourist attire after a sweaty day of sightseeing. But they let us sit anyway, that definitely wouldn’t have happened in Milan.
We were starving so we ordered right away. First we shared a Burrata di Andria with basil, fresh and semidry tomatoes and olives. It was really fresh and I’ve never tried anything like this before you could taste all the flavors in every bite so intense but you could differentiate them.
Then I ordered gnocchi al pomodoro, which was good but nothing compared with the other pasta my better half ordered.
She asked for La Cacio e Pepe and I write this with capital letters because the dish deserves it. This is a simple plate but it was executed to perfection. It’s also a good example of quality ingredients used as they should be: the exact amount and combination of local cheeses, the spice of pepper (which I bet was also local produced), and the exact cooking point –al dente- that makes a perfect pasta.
All this was paired pretty decent Italian wine that I can’t remember but it was suggested by an enthusiast and well-seasoned waiter/bartender that made our evening even better.
