A Dog's Love Does Wonders

in #health7 years ago

Hello Steemians.

Omar and I have just moved to LA a mere four months ago, and I haven't met any new friends, yet. I don't have anyone to talk to, so I thought I'd go ahead and talk to you guys.

I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night. I'd wake up for any little thing and struggle to get back to sleep. I finally got out of bed at noon, having given up on any more sleep. In hindsight, I guess I should have gotten up earlier and simply taken a nap if I felt I really needed it. Anyway, for those who haven't been following, I've been trying to heal my body from leaky gut and all the autoimmune diseases that come with it. To that end, I've been eating a gluten-free vegan diet, but it's been over 20 days and I'm still feeling absolutely terrible. I keep having to run to the restroom for less-than-pleasant relief, very few of my clothing items fit, and I finally just broke down and cried.

I've heard that crying releases bad hormones from your brain or something of that sort. I gave it a try.

My dog, Wallace, dropped the toy he was chewing on and rushed over to see what was going on. He flipped onto his back and proceeded to paw at my face and wiggle his little butt until I got up to wash my face, and even then he sat up tall and attentive, ready to throw himself at my face again if I wasn't done with the tears.

He definitely made me feel better, but any encouragement you guys would like to provide would be warmly welcome. I just don't know who to talk to these days.

Thank you for sharing your story. I am sure you will soon get better, just hang in there and do stick to the gluten free vegan diet. Most times diets take few months to have an impact. I have been following Omar's channel and I remember when u guys got Wallace. Glad to see how much joy he brings - take good care of him :)

Hi, I am sorry to read that you haven't experienced any major improvement since the start of your diet fix. I would like to share some of my experience with you in the hope that you find a way to fix your digestive issues.

For the first time I realised that I had digestive tract issues, i.e. became aware that it was not normal what I was experiencing on a day to day basis, was when I tried out a ketogenic diet for a few weeks which made me leave out lots of different foods from my diet. A great post about the ketogenic diet you can find here, written by @irime : https://steemit.com/health/@irime/my-ketogenic-lifestyle-or-how-i-traded-cake-and-cookies-for-mental-clarity-better-performance-and-consistent-energy-levels

On this diet my belly suddenly felt peaceful and calm, a drastic change to the usual bloated state. What were the foods that I sequentially identified as the culprits in my diet?

  • Milk products that still contain lactose -> milk, cream, curd and cream cheese
  • Sorbitol sugar containing fruits (think of pears, nectarines, raisins, dried apricots); foods that have sorbitol added as sweetener or wetting agent
  • certain vegetables, somewhat correlating to their FODMAP content as shown in the following chart ;

My conclusions from these observations and visits to a gastroenterologist are that I have lactose and sorbitol intolerance and likely an IBS as I am sensitive to FODMAP containing foods.

My first advice to you is to seek out a gastroenterologist if you haven't done so and get those issues checked that can be currently somewhat reliably checked (e.g. lactose, sorbitol, fructose, histamine and gluten intolerance).

My second advice is to identify the foods that cause you most of the trouble by sequentially subtracting them from your diet. As fond as I was of the idea of a vegetarian / meat-free diet during a phase of my life I had to come to terms with it being incompatible with my intestinal reactions to lots of the "healthy" vegan foods.
It made a huge difference when I left out lactose-containing products (not an issue on a vegan diet though), sorbitol containing fruits, lots of tasteful veggies like zucchinis, egg plants, broccoli.
The fruits and veggies that I can still eat without regrets are: bananas, oranges, water melon, ananas, raw apples in limited amounts; tomatoes, cucumbers, raw carrot and lettuce.

It might be worthwhile for you to reconsider the constituents of your vegan diet and whether being vegan is really superior to a lacto-ovo-pesco vegetarian diet.

Anyhow, I really hope you get your issues fixed as I can feel your pain (especially relating to being in social settings with a rumbling belly)!

Upvote if you like it.. Proceeds goes to charity to rescue dogs .

Upvoted because it's Wallace!

I've never been in your position as far as the diet causing problems but I do have IBS. It has very similar symptoms except it is never ending. Keep your head up and you'll come out of this healthier and tougher. Plus, Wallace is by your side. How could you be down while seeing that cute little face of his?

I"m starting to wonder if IBS is what I have. It honestly feels like I have every digestive issue known to man. lol

It's possible. Or maybe lactose intolerance. Or both. Lol

Yeah, all of it! I should try the diet that Space Barbie woman is on. She claims that she can survive off of air. XD

Hello, nice to meet you. As someone who has suffered with chronic pain for most of my life I can relate to what you are going through. While I can't say what will work for you, I would be happy to share what assisted me in my personal journey for health, balance and well being. First just let me start off by saying that it's amazing how connected everything in this universe really is. Even things you would think have nothing to do with each other. That said I would like to share with you a little about my experience with an alternative healing modality called Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. BCST for short, is a form of therapeutic touch for healing trauma. I studied BCST for two years in school, and worked hands on with hundreds of different individuals. I am not a certified practitioner by trade, and in no way is this meant to be medical advice or even recommendation. I believe you if you find something that works for you, you should stick with it, but it's also good to try a little of everything.

So, in nature there is a bio-mechanical mechanism that all living organisms have which for sake of argument we will call "potency". (Other cultures refer to this energy as Chi). The job of this mechanism is to maintain equilibrium within the system, to maintain what we call "health". I'd like you to image a scenario, a very natural one in which a deer is fleeing from a predator. When the deer experiences this event the autonomic nervous system kicks into high gear, and the bio-mechanical mechanism we know as "fight or flight" (it's really fight, flight or freeze) kicks in and the animal will do whatever it can to survive, or in some cases may simply freeze, in order to "check out" mentally before it experiences it's inevitable demise. The point to all of this is, sometimes when animals experience traumatic events such as near death experiences they will go off and find a safe and quiet place and their bodies will begin doing something magical. The body of the animal begins to shake and shake, and it will continue shaking until finally it stops and the animal is able to get up and simply go on it's way again like nothing ever happened. Aside from some minor physical wounds which will heal the animals is as though the event never happened. This "shaking" process is the autonomic nervous system releasing the accumulated trauma from the event. What happens when we experience trauma is that our bodies "store" the trauma inside. In BCST, there is no difference between the physical and the emotional, because the emotional "IS" physical, does that make sense?? The Chinese have some interesting correlations between emotions and the organs too, I mean it's all connected and different expressions of the same thing, getting back to the point...

As human animals we experience trauma in countless ways. In fact just being born can be traumatic for some and impact development in a variety of ways if left unresolved. Humans have the same bio-mechanical mechanism and it's designed to protect us from being hurt, and it's a fantastic and extremely sophisticated and highly intelligent system.. but.. it gets dumb sometimes. As humans we often get "stuck" in the "fight", "flight", or "freeze" modes and our autonomic nervous systems can and will run like that unless the underlying issues are acknowledged, and allowed to resolve. That's the beauty of BCST. The therapist does not do anything except for listen to the system of the client, a good therapist does not apply their intention whatsoever, they simply acknowledge the patient and focus on the health and the well being in their system. As they say in BCST "something happens". The neutral touch of the therapist allows the trauma in the system to begin to resolve, and let me just say this isn't always a pleasant experience. In fact it is very difficult and it should be, it has to be as it will always get worse before it gets better. But that is what is so amazing about the human body, and all bodies for that matter. I truly believe our bodies have the capability and intelligence to heal themselves. They just need to be given the right "space".

I would be happy to continue talking with you Elle, if you would like to continue this discussion. Take good care of yourself. Peace :)

I almost wish that this was a post on your blog so that I could resteem it.

I really appreciate everything you've written here. I agree with a lot of it, and I am interested to know more. Is there a good book you would recommend?

Thank you for offering this discussion.

Thank you Elle. I appreciate those who listen. Yes there is definitely a great book I would recommend you can probably find the epub version somewhere. Here it is; Waking The Tiger, by Peter Levine.

Sounds like your going through a tough detox. If you're not familiar with fasting I would give that a shot. I have fasted for 7 days on only spring water and it was the best I have ever felt to this day. Only reason I stopped the fast at 7 days is because I wanted some stimulation for my pallet, I could have gone longer. Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you. Fasting is difficult for me because I get what I like to call "violent" hunger. If I don't eat, I will throw up. Then I won't stop throwing up until I eat. I think my digestion is too far gone for fasting.

Your digestive tract will heal itself if it is given the right environment to heal. I would suggest looking into Arnold Ehret or Dr.Sebi's work on the matter. What you could be experiencing is parasites causing hunger which pretty much everybody including myself has to some extent. I'm no specialist on the subject I'm just speaking from experience but cleansing is vastly different for everyone. I healed my fractured foot with diet and fasting alone.

I believe it! But... parasites? How would I get those out, if I did have them?
