What Are You Doing For Others?

A few pearls and dozen brilliant baubles, Victorian style – who can deny the Yuletide Tree?

Martin Luther King Jr. was such a wise and wonderful man in so many different ways. I sometimes wonder if he would be embarrassed or disappointed that they built a memorial to him that is the largest thing out there on the National Mall, for he was a man who was not at all about himself.

His question, "What are you doing for others?"

I pose this question to my family last month and hoped that one of them would come up with an idea that would positively impact another, or many others somewhere along the way. In my own personal experience, the effect is usually two-fold. Fill a need and fill your heart. We as a family shopped for a Christmas Tree for an assisted living facility, finding just the right one, which is a lot easier said than done. When that was finished, we loaded it up and brought it to its final destination, spending hours decorating the tree, but, mostly talking with the residents. And, as always, it was a most wonderful experience . Learning. Having a purpose. Being active. Being gracious or grateful.

I always hope this lesson is not lost on me.

A flower! There must be a flower. Always a flower.

Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

That's so awesome, y'all! I used to work in a nursing home, some folks had no visitors at all and usually staff was so busy, they didn't have much time for visits. I'm sure the residents appreciated your time AND the tree! 💚

They were actually so adorable and they made it so much fun for everyone. It is one of the things that my family and I do and that has everything to do with some of my experiences in a nursing home. So, we try to do some Christmas caroling and baking cookies and bright again cards for everybody so that everybody gets at least one card. For me, gives me a sense of warmth that's their feelings are reflected back.

It is an absolute privilege enjoy to spend time with most of them. They always make it feel special.

That's awesome!! I forgot to mention, you might want to add the tag #ophumanangels, which is all about random acts of kindness.
There was this one lady who was at the nursing home I worked at, who I would still write xmas cards to after I left. She was so great. When she passed, her daughter wrote me a card to tell me and said that it mattered so much to the lady that I had kept in touch. She and her daughter, when I worked there, joined in the knitting club I started where we knitted squares to make a blanket for afghans4Afghans, and then I sewed it together at the end. She was the only resident who stuck with it. I have a picture somewhere of her, me, and one of the CNAs who also contribited, holding the finished blanket.

I hardly write about these gestures, although I love doing them.

But, your afghans 4Afghans sounds like an amazing club and I raise my glass to you! How wonderful and you must have really inspired her for her to continue! Everyone needs a reason to continue.

May God Bless you richly!

When the OHA tag was really active, it became like a ripple of kindness - everyone's posts would inspire others to do similar acts, then they would post, which would inspire others. That's why I love it. Plus I just love reading about everybody's ops. :)

I can see the thoughts behind it. ;)

And thanks for the tip! :)

My pleasure~

Wow that is so nice! You are truly a one of a kind sweet person. I am freshly amazed every single day. Sure is a pleasure to see how you not only talk about sharing and kindness, but you live it out as well. Surely they broke the mold after you, Sunshine.

Sorry about the small upvote. 100%!! Can you believe that?? Yikes!

Anyway, it just feels right, that is all that I can say. We like Christmas and the spirit of it and they like the tree and the Christmas Carols and punch and cookies. A match made in heaven. Right?

Thank you for being here for me, so I can be here for you.
Enjoy your day and stay creative!
Botty loves you. <3

Thanks, botty! :)

We never realised this question to ourselves, but as a human being we are finding some better solutions to reach and help people.

Helping others who cannot help themselves is our job in life, but, that is only my opinion.

Your gesture is wonderful and part of a tradition, I'm sure of that. Unfortunately for me, I have nothing to boast about in this regard. I hope to fix this by the end of the year.

Oh, Dan! @bluemoon You are a wonderful person with a big heart! Don't undersell yourself. We all give of ourselves in different ways. My kids like doing this and it is something we can all do together.

We get a lot of warm feelings from something so simple. Thank you for your comment. Are you at your destination??

Thank you for seeing me this way, @dswigle! I am a man who has a lot of mercy for the people around but I feel like I do too little for them.

That is only your impression.

Thank you for believing this about me.

Thank you very much!

Always great to learn valuable things from your posts :)

Thank you.

Yes, we need to be doing good things for others to build them up! That's what we all need!
