What's it about giving publicly?

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Hello steemians, trust you're having a nice time after the christmas holidays while we prepare for the new year.

There has been a burning issue in my mind as it concerns giving and the idea of making it public. Things like celebrating my birthday and choosing to go to the orphanage and spend some time with some children there. I take pictures and I upload on social media.

There are also those instances wherein One sees a beggar/destitute on the streets and one chooses to cloth such person or even provide a shelter and after this, the whole of the episode is shared on the social media.

Here is my point, I am confused. Why?

There are two perspectives to which I am viewing this from.

First is from the perspective of one of my local parlance which says you should not allow your other hand know when you are doing a good deed... In real sense, it means that things like I stated above should be done without anyone knowing that you did them and even as the good book says, the reward of such deed is waiting for the doer in heaven.

The second perspective is from that of the man that needs to be encouraged by the act of his fellow man. Of a truth, I believe the sight of a man doing something right could to a large extent encourage the other one to follow suit. Of cause, we must have had instances in which the fact that one person shared his experience at an orphanage home; about how happy the children were after they were visited with love from a fellow, spurred another to borrow a leaf from such act.

We sure cannot explain away the extent to which our visuals (what we see) tends to affect our actions and decisions. In the other way, we can't speak enough of people who display these pictures mainly for "personal" gains.

As I said, I am confused and I need opinions on this. Can we have a discussion?

If yes, please drop your views in the comments section below and let's talk; I want to learn.

All depends on motive. We obviously treat individual based on their motive for displaying such. In this age, pictures rule. At the slightest thing, pictures are taken. No side is wrong nor right.

Thanks bro... For coming by... Trully pictures reign..

well... Most people do both...give publicly or secretly
It depends on your intent and in a way your drive and motive. I wont overlook spirituality too...sometimes you feel it in your spirit to give and not tell anyone but God.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks for dropping by sis.

true charity comes from the heart, it doesnt matters whether its made public or not but you and your conscience knows the truth.

merry christmas and a happy new year sir

Thanks for coming by @camzy. I go by your definition of true charity too, but my dilema is "How do we live by example then?" If no one knows the example of what charity is? I for one don't like showmanship, but just think we trash this out.

I think it doesn't really matter if you're on screen or in the attic where no one sees. The main thing is doing good when you can... If it gets covered on the network news or it gets appreciated by people around, then that great.. If it doesn't, then that's great too... 🙂 no side is short...

Personally, Im hardly moved to good deeds when people are watching... Id do it anyways if it were solely dependent on me, but I'd hesitate a bit so as to give someone else the opportunity to take the credit... But that's just me.

Thanks @pangoli for coming by. Your condition is quite true with me too... But people who know me understand I can be very objective to matters... I could have easily just concluded doing and hiding it is the best, but my question still remains "how do we show the example to the ignorant?"
