Dealing With Cannabis And Driving

in #cannabis5 years ago

Countless accidents have occured on the road thanks to drinking and driving over the years and as the move for cannabis legalization has spread, we are seeing more messages come around on the television, radio, throughout the community, warning people about the dangers of mixing cannabis and driving.

If someone isn't familiar with cannabis, they might assume that anyone who uses cannabis is going to equally have their driving skills impaired, but that isn't the case. Studies have shown that cannabis has less prominent effects for heavy users who are used to taking a higher dose of the substance. Therefore, for someone who is using cannabis regularly, they might not have their awareness or driving skills impaired to such an extent that someone might have who isn't used to using the substance. As well, there are many individuals who use cannabis as a medication and on a regular basis which would mean they have a high tolerance and that the medicine has less physiological effects over time.

The move to issue penalties then over roadside screening tests is obviously highly problematic and has caused a growing number of people a great deal of headache and concern.

These tests have proven to be unreliable and for those who use cannabis regularly they will test positive for THC but that doesn't in-turn translate to them being impaired at the time of operating a vehicle.

So while those who are quick to slap anti-cannabis driving stickers on their cars, they might want to be sure that they themselves aren't talking on the phone while driving, or texting while driving, even being sleep-deprived or engaging with a touch screen device on the vehicle is also dubbed risky behavior.

These activities, aside from cannabis, have been shown to dramatically increase your risk of getting into an accident much more than cannabis-impaired driving might.

Dozens of states have already made changes to cannabis prohibition and the country isn't seeing a chaotic rise in car accidents like some might have expected. Researchers suggest that for reports that did suggest initial increases in accidents where states have legalized, it might have been because of a sudden uptick in new users, as the THC is going to impact new users differently. Those rates reportedly eventually leveled out.

Current methods are incapable of detecting a person's specific level of impairment and that makes it difficult for authorities to deal with this problem.

How much THC equals impairment?

Because there hasn't been an accurate breath test that has been created for cannabis, it means there will be many drivers who will be wrongfully convicted with faulty methods, and others who are acting in an unsafe manner who might escape penalty.

Lawmakers and authority figures will continue to push for those legal limits on cannabis though, but the methods they have been using have been highly criticized for being scientifically flawed and unreliable for now.

Vinny Eastwood had something to say on this.

The study that was actually performed to see if cannabis has an effect on traffic accidents. And the results are that it lowers accidents.

Road rage? Nah man, i am feeling mellow.
Speeding? Nah man, i got all the time in the world.

And if they get really out of it, they stop their car.
Often on the side of the road.

So, if the po-po were actually after safer roads, a joint before driving would be mandatory. But, this isn't about safety, this is about getting more people in jail and confiscating cars and cash.

Would you put your child on a school bus with a driver who uses cannabis regularly?

Would you be surprised if you found out that being under the influence makes one more alert, more cautious, increasing their follow distance, decreasing their speed? That's what the Department of Transportation found when they did a test twenty years ago in 99.

I smoke two joints in the morning
I smoke two joints at night.

I smoke two joints before i start my car
it helps me get there all right.

Lol indeed, the study is 280 pages long if I remember correctly and again, DOT, and the conclusion was that half the federal legal limit for alcohol is incomparable to smoking a full joint and getting behind the wheel, the smokers under rated their performance, while the drunks over rated themselves, even though they failed to signal, unlike smokers, would follow too close, would speed and be aggressive, unlike the smokers.

I'm surprised indeed but you didn't answer the question.

Why wouldn't I. If it makes the person more cautious, if it makes them drive slower and follow farther away than they would regularly, then yes.

don't think I would ever put my child on any school bus 😂😉👍Since previous research has indicated that some individuals have the potential to reach full tolerance, their use wouldn't make a difference in such a circumstance.

Yes, i would never put my child on a school bus.
Sending them to low security prison to be brain washed is not my idea of raising children well.

Do you have any?

The law requires that i say, no.

Do you have any?

I would not be comfortable let alone my children being in a vehicle driven by a person under the influence of alcohol, drugs or cannabis.
