One of the reasons that people are against homeschooling is that they fear crazy ideas being taught to children by their parents. Now, as far as what you consider to be a “crazy idea,” it's humorously subjective, varying drastically from one person to the next.

Trying to force families to submit to a certain education standard doesn't ensure that crazy ideas won't be passed on.

What is there to stop any parent from teaching their children before or after school?

Parents have the freedom to challenge everything that the kids are being taught from those public authority figures. Nothing prevents them from speaking their mind.

To infringe their basic liberty and freedom then, and demand that homeschooling be banned over fear of what the children might be exposed to, isn't reasonable enough because the ban doesn't in any way prevent parents from passing on whatever message they would like.

Another fear is that children aren't going to be well educated, but again that's another unreasonable fear that shouldn't be justification enough to infringe on the basic human rights and liberty of people to freely choose their own educational path.

Public schools, despite their best efforts, have produced results today that include millions of people being illiterate.

Meanwhile, you can find various reports that indicate homeschooled children are just as educated, if not more educated, than their peers in public and private institutions. They're just as socialized and can be just as successful. And a homeschooling family shouldn't be looked at with suspicion because they want to design a life that better suits their needs, instead of submitting to one that society wants to design for them.

Plenty of abusive parents have sent their children to private and public institutions, many of them, meanwhile there are many loving, peaceful, and considerate parents who choose to take a more active role in the education of their children with homeschooling. In either case, it's unfair to make misguided assumptions; to assume that the educational path that's chosen says something about the character of the parent. Sometimes there's more to it than that.

My best friend's mother was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years but she is now retired. What if she wanted to homeschool her grandchildren though, and perhaps one or two other kids from her neighborhood because their parents thought she was well equipped for the job. Should she not be able to because there are some who fear what she might teach? When we allow our lives to be ruled by a few or even a majority it can quickly erode personal liberty and basic freedoms that we take for granted, and push us toward a future that might not look so bright had we instead sought to flourish voluntary exchange and peaceful arrangements.

Homeschooling is only an educational path and it can be vastly beneficial or could be individually limiting, it depends on how the person approaches the experience. And the same is true of any educational journey, it is up to the individual to reap the most benefit out of it as possible.
