A Life Of Fast Food

in #health6 years ago

It's no secret that eating junk food and fast food is bad for you. Previous research has suggested that eating a diet that includes plenty of junk food and fast food options might fuel depression, make the immune system more aggressive, can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and more.

A recent study that was published in The BMJ journal sought to specifically investigate what connection fried food might have with longevity. The study is reportedly one of the first to investigate how consuming any certain type of fried food might impact mortality risk over time.

Researchers wanted to know more about the long-term impacts of following such a diet and their study involved analyzing decades worth of data for over 100k women between the ages of 50 to 79. They had filled out a questionnaire about their eating habits back in the 1990s and then researchers had followed their health for years, up until 2017. Unfortunately the one questionnaire that they had filled out is a limitation of the study because they didn't assess whether or not the participants had altered their eating habits over time.

There were at least 30k people who were involved in the study who had already passed away.

To try and get a better idea of the damage inflicted from the food they sought to account for factors such as participants' drinking habits, medical history, their demographics, smoking, and overall diet quality.

They found that for those individuals who consumed at least 1 serving of fried food per day that they had increased their risk of dying early by at least 8 percent.

The results also suggested that they would have at least an 8 percent increased chance of dying from cardiovascular disease. Surprisingly, they didn't conclude that fried food consumption had corresponded with a higher risk of dying from cancer.

Fried fish and fried chicken were the strongest link to early death...

Compared to other fried foods, chicken and fried fish were seen to be the worst choice. They also looked at items such as tortilla chips, crackers, and french fries. Researchers noted however that they weren't able to specifically investigate french fries and how they impacted health because they had been categorized in a miscellaneous group. They have noted that healthier food items in that category might have obscured the results.

Previous research has suggested that consuming fries more than 2x per week might at least double your risk of death.

It's doubtful that many of those individuals who are consuming fried food regularly are operating under the illusion that they are making healthy choices, yet the majority of us will continue. Bad habits are tough to break. Although, previous studies have discovered that improved education on nutrition is likely the key to inspire better eating habits.

Millions of Americans consume fast food at least once every single day.

It's also frequently suggested that it's low income families consuming the most fast food but that might not be the case. As well, many people might assume that eating out is cheaper than buying groceries and cooking at home, but that isn't always going to be the result and often it isn't the cheaper option. One thing is for certain though and that is that the risk of fried food will never be dangerous enough of an issue to warrant government infringement, violating individual liberty in an attempt to “solve” this problem.
