Reach Out, Touch Space - 1 SBD Musical Mini-Challenge

in #landscapephotography7 years ago (edited)

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENTRIES - I WILL REVIEW and PICK a WINNER TONIGHT!

MINI-CHALLENGE: What music best fits this photo?

Upvote and comment to tell me what music my photo sounds like...could be lyrical, instrumental...you tell me!

I'll pick one and send 1 SBD (yes, one whole, big, fat, Steem Dollar!) to the author of my fav comment, so you can justify to yourself the time wasted listening to music all night trying to pick the perfect tune.

You have until 11PM UTC/6PM EST, Tuesday the 23rd. Have fun!

About the image: one of my personal favourite night photos, this was taken out at Dead Horse Point, near Canyonlands National Park in Utah. DHP is on the edge of a plateau and offers stunning views out into the wide canyon vista below...but night photos of the canyon from up high on a moonless night are not impressive, so I chose instead to frame up this gnarled tree off the walkway near the parking lot and illuminate it with flashlight for a wide-angle panorama. It's good to keep an open mind and not get hung up on the obvious subjects!

I hope you like it! In addition to musical submissions, feedback or questions are welcome in the comments section. :)

Milky Way Tree

Dead Horse Point, Utah

Sort:

Beautiful photo!
Well, my first association was "starry, starry night" by Lianne La Havas from a movie Loving Vincent (great one!), but again I am biased as I saw the movie few days ago.
So given some thought one bald guy emerged... now I adore him, 2 years ago I traveled 1700kms just to enjoy his music - happened to be THE BEST EVER (out of 4 that I have been), now... which song should I chose?
Well, after about half an hour debating between Surfing with the Alien and blue dream... I am going to say, definetely:

BTWm love the angle of the Milky Way, as in my country it can be seen just by crossing at 45% above my head.

Thanks again and enjoy 7minutes and 50seconds of some blue magic ;)

Thank you for putting so much time into the submission, I'm looking forward to watching that! :D

You're at almost exactly the same latitude in Serbia as I am in Ontario. :)

Yeah, just checked it Utah 39, Ontario covering 46* as in Serbia :) Still never seen Milky Way in a form of rainbow :) Usually in Serbia if there is no light pollution then there is some big forest standing in your way to watch the entire sky.

Cheers and keep up with out of the box thinking! :)

I haven't familiarized myself with the patterns, but I think it's lower in winter? Which is better for this type of rainbow effect but worse for observing the colorful core that likes to hide below the horizon.

Anyway, thank you! And maybe some day we'll talk about F1, but not until I've watched races from the last season - I lost track early in the summer. :)

Well, never been too crazy to go into mountain at -20 centigrades or even less. :D

Well, Baku, Singapore and Japan were game changers for this season Brazil was a nice Vettel's personal show ! :) can't wait for a new one in April! :)

Gorgeous full MW pano! Thanks for taking part in the photofeed tag. Resteemed!

Thank you so much, @photofeed, really appreciate the work you're doing helping to share photography here on Steemit, and needless to say I appreciate the resteem! :D

I'd argue this photo sounds like Knights of Cydonia by Muse, both the photo and the song strongly evoke the feeling of being in the American west at night. The song draws on guitar riffs frequently found in Western movies while adding synthesizers, which have connotations of electricity, technology and space. Those three attributes are key in this photo as the colors in the sky contain electric blues in the galaxies and the photo was made possible, just like the song, using technology of the 21st century. In addition, both the song and this photo feel very energetic. While I have no doubt it was actually quite peaceful to take this photo, I feel the sky has an explosive quality to it, which gives the feeling of motion.

Here's a link to the song if you're unfamiliar with it, please excuse the long intro:

Oooh, interesting choice! I know the song well. And even if I don't pick this, bonus points for your efforts in justifying your choice! :D

Thanks! I'm glad you know Muse, I think for those who haven't had exposure (pun intended) to them they can be a bit odd but I'm a big fan.

I might be one who agrees that they're a bit odd, but they also happen to be musical geniuses. I can listen to them all day long even if I may dislike some lyrics, and the melodies stay in one's head forever afterwards.

Absolutely! I don't mean odd as a bad thing, I think it's how they stand out. But yeah, they're all ridiculously talented. I wish I could play piano like Matt or come up with basslines like Chris.

There's no one else like them right now. They've risen above a lot of other music.

Definitely, are you a fan of their newer stuff? I like it but I feel like it doesn't showcase their instrumental talent as much as their older stuff.

I don't know their newer stuff as well. More into Starlight/Resistance/Uprising.

No One's Gonna Love You by Band of Horses. Great shot dude! I've tried doing full panos of the Milky Way, and LR always seems to stretch it out near the top. Do you connect it out manually or automatically?

I second the use of Microsoft ICE. It can stitch things that most others just spit out. And has lots of stitching options to get a natural fit. Only runs on Windows sadly.

Thank you! MW panos are tough and I've rarely had success with it for the reasons you mention. I stitched this one automatically (but if memory serves I had to blend photos of the lit foreground with those of the background because my flashlight was too bright - it was messy). I think I used Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor) - which is still one of the best (and free!) pano stitching softwares available. I can dig in to the history and confirm this if you like. But probably the best tip for getting a MW pano is to shoot it when the MW is low in the sky. When it's straight above it never seems to pano well, no matter how many frames you take. This is one trick I want to get better at - guys like Michael Shainblum make it look easy.

Yes, @intrepidphotos! It allows you to move the stitched image around to fit the frame, something Lightroom and Photoshop lack.

I'll have to look into Microsoft ICE. I have the raws to one that really really should have worked, and I took lots of extra frames just to make sure it would link it together and it did great until the top. It was a little higher in the sky, so that might also have been an issue. Either way, I'll dig through my old raws and work on it again with ICE! Thanks man!

You're welcome! I often start in LR and take the hard cases to ICE. ;)

Normally I have no trouble, but this is the exception. What other times do you take it to ICE?

When you use ICE you'll see that once it spits out the preview it allows you to move the stitched image around, spherically...I lack the words to describe what I mean, but you'll see that it will let you position the panorama output in ways that are different to LR, if you choose.

Understood. I'm definitely going to mess around with it and figure it out. Thanks for your recommendation!

ah, I love that song!! Awesome choice!

Epic picture!! I love this one! That arc of stars above the tree, the way you lit the tree with a flashlight, the composition... it's a stunning work of art.

As for the music: I chose 'All through the night' by Emancipator

Not just because of the title, but also because of the mood it sets. I would imagine playing this song when being right there in that picture. Relaxed, no worries, calmly taking in the beauty of that moment but also excited to be there.

Awesome, thank you! I'm loving getting all these musical selections - I'm going to set aside some time tonight and tomorrow night to listen to them all properly. :D

I can imagine sitting under that tree while listening to "What I've Done" by Linkin Park - RIP Chester :(

Awesome, thanks for the submission! :)

I really enjoy this concept for a contest. Its fresh, and original. This song came to mind immediately.
Generator^ First Floor by Freelance Whales

Hehe, glad you like the idea! Just thought I'd throw something different out to make it interesting. I'll check out that song! Meanwhile, if any freelance whales want to stop by and check out my post...

Now that you have proven your the real Derek Kind -
It has to be "I am not the man you think I am" Bryan Adams

lol

Bahahaha! :D

That's a stunning photo and a very creative idea!
Difficult to choose though. I can't decide between hope or despair, haha! It's such a paradoxical image.

I am going to go with "Learn to be Lonely" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. The tree represents the Phantom ("child of the wilderness"), whose life is rooted in the pain of the past, which keeps him stuck and forces him into a lifetime of loneliness. Yet artistic genius never dies, so endless creative possibilities (celestial expanse) continue to be his breathtaking gift to the world (countless stars and constellations). Nothing can extinguish the artistic impulse, therefore hope transcends despair, and even finds inspiration in it. I suppose I could go on, but I think I'll leave it here. That's my take on this photo.

Gollum's Song?

Yeah, Gollum is quite the paradox. I am toying with LOTR options but I'll think some more. Elvish would definitely sound awesome, though I feel like I'd be cheating a little. :]

Maybe I should have specified "no LotR music because it would automatically win" :p

lol.. don't worry, I would have thought of it anyway. :) LOTR has quite a long soundtrack too

Nonetheless I've listened to it several hundred times.

That is some serious affinity..

Definitely my favourite soundtrack of all time.

Massive Attack - Angel :)

Thank ye! :)
