Did I Just Become a DOLPHIN?

in #steemit7 years ago

I really love this interesting ecosystem known as Steemit! And I always thought it was pretty interesting how different "levels" of users have different marine life names: Plankton, Minnows, Dolphins, Orcas, Whales...

How is This Stuff Calculated, Anyway?

Seems to me that I have pretty much been a "Minnow" forever, but if I understand things correctly, I may just have passed over the line to "Dolphinhood."

It has never been entirely clear to me how each category is arrived at, exactly, but one of the metrics I've seen used in quite a few places is based on Steemd's user Distribution Chart, and you evidently reach "Dolphinhood" at 10 MVests... which happened for me, this morning. At least I hope I am interpreting this correctly!

Stats
The clock rolled past 10 MVests

Of course, it's not much of a deal in the greater scheme of things, but I did feel a certain sense of accomplishment at what felt like "graduating" from what feels like "newbie" level, around these parts.

Steemit user @barrydutton has also written a useful article about the different levels

So What Does it TAKE to Become a Dolphin on Steemit?

Since there are a lot of new folks joining Steemit these days (Welcome to all of you!) I thought I'd take a moment to share some basic stats of what it actually takes to reach this user level.

Something realistic, rather than a bunch of wild promises.

Yes, I am "real person" who doesn't use "bots" and isn't a developer and I did NOT become at member of Steemit during "the early days" when super high rewards were possible. In fact, I wrote my first post on February 2nd, 2017... at a point when interest in Steemit-- and the price of Steem-- were waning, prior to the current resurgence.

Where to, next?

So, by the numbers, it has taken:

  • 101 days
  • 124 blog posts (totaling about 83,000 words-- length of a typical novel)
  • Roughly 500 original photographs

Stated a little differently, about three months of consistent and persistent blogging, along with steady daily commenting and curation. So in the interest of fair disclosure, it does take a fair amount of work to get there! You can't just post a couple of pictures of your dog licking his butt and hope for instant dolphinhood!

What Comes Next?

Well, it seems like it't a very long journey from being a "Dolphin" to becoming an "Orca," so I'm not going to hold my breath. I'm just going to go about being a happy dolphin for now.

Nice work. The lesson here is Persistence is the key don't be a slack bum like me. Still a minnow after 9 months, though I enjoy reading and commenting on posts rather than writing them.

Thank you! Persistence is exactly the key... I was looking for a place resume keeping a "general" (non-niche topic) blog, and it would seem that I have found just that here.

Thanks! I vaguely remember seeing that during my first few days of learning my way around Steemit.

So inspiring to know you made it the old fashioned way so to speak :-) I literally just posted about this...I'll link back to this piece. Not that you need the boost from a bottom feeding minnow :-P

Thanks! I appreciate the good words... and nothing bottom feeding about minnows... I was one, not very long ago! :-)

Congratulations. According to some sources dolphins are the most intelligent species on this planet. So it is quite a leap :)

Thank you @ervin-lemark... sometimes I think dolphins are smarter than (some) humans.

They certainly live a better quality life than we do 😃

If it wasn't for humans disturbing them...

Have a great Sunday.

Congratulations flipper

Thanks @arthuradamson... haven't "seen" you around Steemit as of late, hope all is well in your neck of the woods!

Been busy painting. Was given a commission I just could not turn down. An art collector who has been coming in to see my work for years who admires my work but has never actually bought one, came in to finally buy a particular painting. However the painting he wanted I had sold. He was furious and disappointed and walked out. Five minutes later he came back and asked if I took commissions. I sad "No". However, basically he gave me freedom to do whatever I wanted as long as I used the face of his new wife as the model. Well she was gorgeous and so I just could not refuse lol.
When I am painting I cant really focus so much on other things so I guess I have not been online so much. However, I will not be going away and try to check in when I can. Thanks for noticing though @denmarkguy, means a lot.
As Swartzenegger once said "I´ll be back"

Great achievement @denmarkguy. Next goal: Orca.
Let's say you (or me) will buy $10,000 worth of Steempower, will that make you an 'Orca'?

I don't know, actually... I'm not sure if buying steempower actually ups your Vests count.

Gives you at least more voting power.

Well done you Mr Dolphin woohoo :)

Thanks Karen! It's no bid deal, really... but it felt like a bit of an accomplishment.

Of course it is, we are minnows for ages, or on the way up :)

Good for you! Guess I better erase those dog pics...Well back 2 the drawing board:)

Thanks! No worries... I even made a couple of cat posts somewhere in there....

Congrats!

Congratulations, that's great
Well you make an lot of excellent posts and comments.
And your way of looking at things, gave me some other perspective on some matters, especially in the comments.

You seem to be, as they say in Holland, like a fish in water, which means something like your really in the right environment. Only..........now your not a fish anymore but a mammal. Hihi

Thanks! I always enjoyed "social blogging: when it first came around (10-15 years ago-- before Facebook) and have missed. Facebook pretty much stripped the "creating content" aspects out of "social." Now people just expect validation for sharing a picture of their lunch... no actual creative work or genuine interaction required.
