Beauty of Old Mountain: Last but not least (My Travel Blog)

A little walk through Old Mountain - part #6

“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.”

-Loren Eiseley

I woke up dead sick. My throat decided to hurt like a hell, all muscles were in pain and my head was pulsing in rhythm of war drums. I came to mountain a little bit cold, and adrenaline could not fight anymore with rainy days and cold nights spent in tent. I know that I have fever and that may days in mountain are over. I had to start some medical treatment or it may become serious, and it meant that there was no more hard work for me.

Luckily it was almost our last day in Old Mountain. Sadly, plan was to finally climb Midzor, highest peak at 2169 meters, as weather become more friendly. I was sure that I cannot pull that under antibiotics I just took with morning tea. It was only wise decision to give up and wait for rest of the crew at the camp site. One by one, my friends climbed out their tents, awakened by the smell of coffee I was preparing, to find me standing there with bloody red eyes and voice from horror movie. We climb and ride together for years. They are my mountain family: no secrets, no lying, zero bullshit company which has complete and ultimate trust in each other... In short - they knew I was fucked up.

While having morning coffee, first reacted Lesandro. His actual name is Alexander, but thanks to his 'Italian Lover' look and hilarious approach to one girl we meet on mountain long time ago, he received nickname which stayed forever. His speeches are something only him can deliver, with many facts from amazing sources, surprising plots and witty turns. I cannot repeat what he said from word to word, as I really do not know how to put quotes from Kabbalah and Baywatch in same sentence and still sound sane, but he have that amazing talent and his point was: 'I am staying too!'. Few seconds latter, my friends made decision without even ask for my opinion - they all stays and we will find something easy enough to do so I can join. My protests was followed with that 'will you shut up already' look from everybody, so all I could do was to be even more mad about my sudden illness... and to admit that I have friends from another planet ;)

As I felt responsible for ruin the day, I pulled the Joker out of my sleeve - one location still unseen by us and probably amazing enough to compensate. We are going to see Tupavica Waterfall. Few minutes latter, we packed and relocated our little camp to campsite Vrelo. You may seen some scenes from that location in one of previous blog entries. We get there, jumped on our bicycles and went into one of hardest climbs I ever rode.

No it is not that hard at all. Climb is something kids can take without any effort, but I was very feverish and completely broken and... well I was feeling like shit, to be completely honest. But I knew that it will take me hour and half, maybe two to reach point from where we can approach waterfall, and I could live with that. So at midday we reached point on relatively useful road, from where we had to find our way to cross fast mountain river. Improvised bridge usually exists, but we found out bridge broken into thousand pieces by torrent a few hundreds meters downstream. It was time to cross river in one of two possible ways - or by jumping from one slippery rock to another, or by taking of your shoes and step into ice cold water. Usually, both ways make you very wet ;)

After half hour we were on other side. And we were surprisingly successful, only 50% of our company decided to have unplanned bath in icy water. After quick change to dry shoes and clothes, we continued through woods to Tupavica waterfall. As you may witness, this waterfall is stunningly beautiful and true masterpiece of Nature. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful waterfall in whole Old Mountain. As a fact in favor of that, immodest information that these photos are stolen so many times and published without my approval, that I cannot count. That must means something, right :)

The saddest fact is that this waterfall may cease to exist. It is already endangered years ago by rerouting flow of few distant streams to some mini hydro plants. It turned out that those distant streams are actually source of water for Tupavica. Waterfall now have less than half of his previous flow. I can only imagine how beautiful it was in days before somebody decided to play with Nature.

In last few years, local residents are fighting to prevent new mini plants built in their vicinity. One particular can leave this waterfall without enough water and destroy his beauty completely. Not to mention endanger and damage to local flora and fauna. This is a fight of small people against big multinational corporations. So far they managed to stop further construction and created big movement in Serbia against such projects which destroys Nature. Thanks to their efforts, waterfall Tupavica is one of symbols of Old Mountain and one of most used scene in tourist guides of Serbia. Hopefully, it will be enough for multi-corporations to quit from further experimenting in this area.

This is the end of our walk around Old Mountain. One day we may return to this pearl of Nature, as we still didn't climb Midzor peak, and we really, really want to do that ;)

From you, a little favor: if at anytime you get into position to talk and discuss Old Mountain, protect his beauty and do all you can for this mountain to stays natural and untouched as it is. There are places where humans can plays Gods with their concrete and steal, but this should not be one of them!
