Preface

Mark Twain once famously said "Too much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is never enough". If you ask me, Mark Twain was an alcoholic. But lets ignore the latter part of that quote and focus on the former, "Too much of anything is bad". We have heard that alot of times and for the most part the quote is right. I think that what Mark Twain may have actually meant on a deeper level is that humans all have a tendency to have either one or a few "sins" which they cannot change. These sins are insatiable indulgences, and in Mark's case it was clearly the whiskey. For others it may be money, shiny toys (sports cars etc.) or whatever it maybe. The point is that we all have a craving for something which is never too much for us and which we can never get enough of.

Psychology & Addiction Rants

However, my addiction to cryptocurrencies and Steemit is what I would call positive addictions. I believe that positive addictions may even be synonymous to a passion. Now positive addictions and negative addictions can be viewed as subjective in a philosophical or psychological sense but I will view also additionally scope them in an economic sense.

If you have a negative addiction which I would classify as alcoholism, drug abuse, binge watching content (Netflix, YouTube, TV) or overeating then these things can make you more unproductive and dissatisfied in not only a psychological sense but also an economic sense. There may be exceptions, but I will guarantee you that most people who have bad habits like these will suffer an opportunity loss of money, time and good health in their passionate indulgence and that can be viewed as negative in an economic sense because they will become unproductive.

Now a positive addiction or passion such as being a club-owner (which supplies the alcoholics), a content creator or producer (which gives content and value to Netflix, YouTube, TV or a host of other entertainment platforms), or an executive at a Fast Food Company (which helps increase obesity rates) creates economic content and may even have bad consequences for the consumers but it will help the producers create value.

Conclusion

So I view my addiction to cryptocurrency and Steemit as positive. Because I spend alot of time researching cryptocurrencies and making investments which I believe can grant me a large return in the near future. Because I spend alot of time creating content on Steemit not only to help inform others on cryptocurrency research that I am making but also to reinforce my own research habits and also to grow my Steemit following and engagement over time in the hopes that I can make substantial passive income in the near future off of Steemit (which I can either spend, save or even invest in cryptocurrencies).

I am not ashamed that I spend alot of time in crypto and Steemit as opposed to time doing homework in university (because I believe that the opportunity cost of not doing what I am doing now is much worse than the opportunity cost of not spending too much time on trying hard in university). I am not ashamed that back in late December of 2017 and early January of 2018, I was refreshing Blockfolio every minute like a crackhead looking for his next hit of dopamine. I love the fact that even now as the crypto markets have sobered up, I have not and I am still addicted to crypto, researching, investing in and writing articles on altcoins (most of which are low-cap) and which I believe can bring a 100+ Times Return in the coming 3-4 years. I think about this stuff alot and wake up in the morning thinking about it and go to bed at night dreaming about it. The enormous potential in returns and gains or hype and speculation are what brought me in this market, but what really kept me even in this downturn is not only the potential for enormous returns but the fact that I love writing content on Steemit and expressing myself through my words. I also love researching and learning about cryptocurrencies and blockchain projects because it really keeps me constantly learning, expanding my mind and piques my curiosities of the future and our economic system. I also like writing about investing in ETFs or traditional financial assets and analyzing my own psychology or giving glimpses into deeper perspectives of myself or my other interests such as futurology (as I'm a cyberpunk).

I may be wrong and blissfully ignorant but here is my perspective and I would love to hear your thoughts on opportunity costs, positive and negative addictions as such, whether you agree with me, relate to me or disagree with me. I am open to hearing the other side of the argument, although since the commenters will be Steemians who are also passionate about crypto, it may be more biased 🤣. One thing is for certain however, I am deeply passionate about Crypto (which I have really gotten into in the last 6 months) and Steemit (which I recently joined in March) and I really love what I learn about, the projects I invest in & I love the Steemit Community. I love the opportunity to vent and to express myself on this platform and have great hopes and dreams for Steemit and Crypto in the near future!

Thank you to all of my followers (I have hit 1,400 now!) and especially to my loyal followers who upvote, comment and resteem. I Love Steemit and Crypto and I am clearly addicted. I hope that you guys follow your hearts and find the positive addictions (passions) which drive you (as I am sure that Steemit, Crypto and alot of other hobbies and interests which you guys showcase on the platform are) and continue with the same energy regardless of the cyclical and volatile nature of the markets such as the 🐻 one we are in now. I believe that this is just the start of something grand, great and rewarding not just economically but also spiritually.

I think Steemit is an awesome addiction to have lol.

I joined steem platform in the month on March this year and I am a bit successful here. But I had no idea that what cryptocurrencies can do or make impact on this world. That's why I could only buy my first cryptocurrencies in the same month in which I joined this platform. However, I invested around $150 in buying steem which gave me a lot of benefit here. Now, my voting value has reachedupto 0.01 which is good as my upvote can be beneficial for anyone who receives upvote from me. Sadly, the steem price went down after I bought them but I am still hopeful that my investment will not turn into a loss.
This platform is amazing. I can see, meet and know about the people all around the world on this single platform. Before that I was active on Facebook and had a lot of fans there but I was not getting any earning from it. Steemit gives me an opportunity to earn while using social media and blog site.
I hope you will be a big successful here because your posts are full of usefulness , good content and adding value to this platform.

I agree, Steemit is an amazing platform in which we get paid for what we have to say! Don't worry, this is just cyclical and natural during a FUD downturn. Before you know it the prices are gonna go back up, stay strong and keep posting your beautiful pictures!!!

Thank you for your kind words also @akdx

I do wish I was addicted to the crypto world much earlier than 4 months ago. the crypto world is slowly peaking my interest and obsession and even planning to take a course on cryptocurrency to understand more about this.

You have the right passion and drive :-)

@abmakko LOL, thanks 😆

Btw, I think a good amount of people missed the bus in early 2017 with btc, ether, neo and other alts. But I think this is just the beginning and there will still be crazy opportunities to make a handsome roi in crypto. It can be hard to see rn, because the market is crazy down back from Jan highs, but if you think long-term (3-5 Yrs +) then you will see that you too can get rich in this digital gold rush! It is still very early when you think about tech development, implementation and adoption as well as getting these business models up and running from just a whitepaper.
