I've been a long-time fan of Soulwax ever since they released their third album 'Any Minute Now', which featured somewhat popular songs such as: E Talking and NY Excuse.

The reason why I like them so much is because their music has evolved so much over the years. They started out as your typical band, but then went on to produce music that clashed the world of guitar music with electronic music.

I've picked one of their lesser known albums for review. Their album 'Belgica' was made especially to be used as a soundtrack for the Belgian movie 'Belgica'. What's so interesting about this particular album, is that every song is played by fictional bands, some of which have some pretty funny names.

These bands all play a part in the movie 'Belgica', but in reality all the music is originally produced by Soulwax. So what you get is an album with 16 songs that sound very different, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this madness. Just how I like it...

Now I'll present 5 songs of this album that I particularly like. Keep in mind that since these songs are from fictional bands, so they all have both band name + title.

The Shitz - How Long

The name for this song is kind of a joke about how some songs just go on and on, at least that's what I thought when I first heard it. Don't get me wrong, I really like it, but the repetitive nature of this song, together with the lyrics really make it pretty funny to listen to. I've always seen it as a jab at certain kinds of mainstream rock music.

Charlotte - The Best Thing

I view this as a really serious track, the vocals are just amazing in my opinion. When I listen to this song, I just get this feeling that you only get when you're really listening to a song that you like. The vocals are perfectly accompanied by a steady beat and synths, if this band actually existed I'd like to hear more from them...

Erasmus - Ti Ricordi Di Me

Turn down the volume for this song, it's pretty overwhelming when you hear it for the first time. This is the musical diversity I was talking about. There are definitely some industrial influences in this song, wouldn't look too bad at an alternative art gallery.

The clip features a famous Belgian TV personality as the singer, who goes by the alias "Kenji Minogue", loosely translated as "Do you remember me". The title of this song is "Ti Ricordi Di Me", which is Italian for "Do you remember me", just an inside joke it seems.

The lyrics are in Italian, but don't mean anything. Still a catchy song if you like this type of music. It was also used in one of Versace's fashion shows, just a little tidbit of information...

Rubber Band – Caoutchouc

Now this song has the typical Soulwax sound. It doesn't have any lyrics, but features a very swing-y, disco-y sound that I just adore. Not to mention that bassline, I could listen to that all day long!

There's really not much to say about this particular song, but I just had to include it just because this is all what Soulwax stands for. Too bad there isn't a good video clip of this song.

Burning Phlegm – Nothing

Care for some metal? When you hear this song, you just want to be in the moshpit that is shown in the video clip. Okay, the lyrics are pretty much incomprehensible , but that just adds to the whole vibe of this song.

I mean for a song from a fictional band, it's pretty good. The guitar riffs are catchy and when you see the clip, you'd think this was an actual band.

You can listen to this whole album for free on Bandcamp. That's one of the things I also like about Soulwax, they usually upload all their music themselves to be listen to for free.

I'm definitely going to be posting more of their stuff later, aside from making great music, they're also quite adept at making videos.

I hope you've enjoyed listening to these songs, I know it's a lot to take in because it just seems to be all over the place.

Thanks for sharing I dont think I have ever heard their music really liked the first one and will listen tothe others while checking out other posts

Interesting choice and band. I had to look them up as I have not heard of them. The one I keep going back to is 'Charlotte - The Best Thing'. I like how the synths fade in. Good song. The metal one is OK too, just short.

EDIT: This is pretty good too - The Shitz - How Long

The metal one is my least favorite one, I just included it because it was so different from the other ones. I'm glad you hadn't heard of them, it means that it fits the theme :)

Lol.. just noticed the poster from the Theatrical release.

Ohh, I hadn't even seen that :D Doesn't surprise me one bit though.

Great review! I am going to have to check them out when I get a chance. That is a very interesting concept they did for the movie soundtrack. I haven't ever heard of anything like that before.
