Large Emerald moth - Geometra papilionaria

in #nature8 years ago

I was very pleased to learn about a moth I hadn't seen before. Initially I thought it was a butterfly because of its size. I found it in the bathroom and to avoid attracting it to the light I didn't switch on the lights, therefore, the photos are quite drab.

I also took this one:

At this point it was clear the photos were rather blurred so I enlisted @mivstar's help because of better camera access and you can see the 'slightly clearer' result below.

Although I hadn't noticed this moth around before it's apparently common here in mid Wales.

It lives near established woodland and flies around this time of the year. I found out more information about it here and here. Everywhere I read about it described it as 'common', but I had never seen it before and will check out for more.

Very interesting. I don't think I have ever seen a green moth. Or even a green butterfly. Perhaps you are lucky that moths in general aren't common in your house :)

Indeed we are very lucky, @steven-patrick, considering we live in the countryside. The main thing is not to leave the lights on or windows open at night otherwise they'd be trapped inside !

Wow.. that is really pretty @cryptocariad. I like the green on the emerald moth (i like the name too :). Have not seen it before. I really like the first photo. It shows how nice and spread out the wings are.

Thank you @marblely... I also love that name. I have to confess I always get a bit confused colour-wise between emerald and jade ...😁

A green moth - I don't think we have them here in Northern Germany. Ours are mostly beige or grey or brown.

I had actually never seen this beautiful type of moth before, @muscara, although I have seen some lovely 'dalmatian' looking ones here, and lacy looking ones here.
