Two harmless moths...

in #nature8 years ago

I love seeing these moths at home. They look so exotic with their coats and fancy antennae.

Last year I saw a number of this Ermine moths, Spilosoma lubricipeda. I usually just refer to them as Dalmatian moths. One thing I like about them is that the caterpillar (?) eats stinging nettle leaves (yay... we need them in big numbers though).

Below's a new visitor - it was by the front door and hasn't really moved much since.

It's a Buff Ermine, Spilosoma lutea.

I have read that both these moths are harmless, but in big numbers they can do a bit of damage to bushes or trees - not seen at home.

Wow.. these are very elegant moths. The ones I have seen are usually dark brown, grey, black.

and do they have the 'furry' top @marblely ?

Hmm... you are right, I don't think they have furry top. Your moths are pretty... the more I look at them, the cuter they are. Just makes me wanna go pat them.

Have you seen Mr Finch's website @marblely?
Mister Finch makes just this sort of creature... I'm so tempted to make my own moth and, as you say, the little moths do make you feel as if they need to be patted, but they're only small, so bigger moths would be better.... like this bee

I had to include this photo from this website... it's just so cool 😁

Oh wow.. They look so real (they are not real, right?) Its like cute and creepy at the same time! Mister Finch is very talented. I have not seen his website before, nor have I seen such art before. Thanks for sharing @cryptocariad!

No, thank goodness 🌸 Great props though ... I don't think he's done animated film but they would be awesome @marblely!

I agree! Ooo I would like to cuddle those bees 🤗
