The day I ate Charlie
Everything you see in this picture is edible (except me, unless you happen to belong to a cannibal tribe. If you do, you're - luckily- on the verge of extinction, sorry.)
Do you remember that awkward moment when you realized the juicy sausage you're going to eat was a real (not anymore) living being?
You don't? Try harder.
Nothing yet? Oh, well...I do.
My grandpa was passionate about hunting and fishing and he used to bring home any sort of alive and edible sweet animals. But they all used to misteriuosly disappear after a week or so and when I'd ask where did they go, my parents always told me they escaped. So I grew up with a strong belief that crabs are supersmart and that rabbit can easily open their small spring door.
I had happened to see a bunch of eels darting away from their bowls and hide under a piece of furniture (That was a funny day!), so until I was 7-8 years old I had no problem in believing them.
This state of things suddendly changed when grandpa brought home the sweetest chicken I've ever seen in the world. I named him Charlie and we became great friends.
But after a few days
(Oh, no! Not again!)
he was nowhere to be found. That mistery was getting thickier and thickier and, as I was very fond of him, I couldn't believe he just left me.I thought we were friends! I can't believe you left me, stupid Charlie!
But then two thing simultaneously happened and suddendly, a lighting of awareness teared the veil:
My little brother came out from the half-bath off with an happily unaware smile on his chubby face and my beloved friend, croacked in his hands. At the same time I heard my mother saying: " Ehi, don't play with dinner!"
That awful day I sweared I would never, ever, EVER eat meat again and I ended up being vetarian for the next 19 years.
At the time vegetarianism wasn't so common and we had no internet to overload us with informations so I basically spent my teen year feeding myself with pasta and cookies and fainting around.
Later I found out we need proteins, vitamins and other stuff in order to survive and I started a more balanced diet.
sort of. Nasty, nasty sugars!
But still I always lack energy, no matter how many pills of nutritional supplements I choke down, so I recently reintegrate a tiny bit of meat in my diet.
I did notice a few improvement and apparently I'm able to do the stairs without cardiac events again, But I can't prevent myself from not considering it to be food and dislike its smell and taste. (sorry, no intention to insult meat lovers here, it's just a personal issue)
I would be so much happier if I could just feed myself with veggies and stay healthy and strong.
Quite a few of my friends are vegetarian or vegan, I even met a few fructarians, but none of them followed this diet for such a long time as I did. I believe anyone is different and requires his personal lifestyle. But, if you have any experience with that, I would love to hear your story.
Help me!!!
Wish you a good night,
creepyturtle

Although I've never considered trying a vegetarian or vegan diet, I respect anyone's personal choice for nutrition.

What a way to be come a vegetarian!!!
I am actually one, and a staunch one. I have been for the last 2 years. The health benefits of course are enormous. Veges have loads of fibre, and this...well. You only have to look them up, to know how important they are to our health. I am glad they have helped with your cardiac woes.
But of course when all is said and done, diet is only one of the several lifestyle changes we have to pay attention, for overall health.

it is very difficult, but not impossible to get all the necessary nutrients from plant sources alone.
I think most people would do better if they just ate less meat but of a higher quality and stayed away from all the processed crap. The processed crap is what needs to be removed from the diet more then anything.
That sounded like a horrible way to find out where meat comes from though.
My parents made or well tried to make us eat a chicken we raised and watched him kill for dinner once, it was not a happy dinner and we all went to bed hungry, well the kids lol. Since then I have come to terms with them killing livestock to eat for dinner but I never like it when its the pets. Once my parents took a lamb in and we raised it with the dogs in the house for a year or so and next time I came over (we live on opposite sides of the country) I asked where Loty the lamb was and dad said we ate him last night.... At least I didn't know until later this time. Otherwise I probably would have gone to bed hunfry again lol.
Lol. Sorry about that :D
