After a month of beta testing on the consoles, Destiny 2 has finally arrived on the PC three years after the original and once again developed by Bungie with their affinity for regenerating health and weapon crosshair.

Destiny 2 is a step up from the previous game, almost across the board though. Truth be told, it doesn't really reinvent the wheel or really do things all that much differently it is where it matters most, a pretty solid game that'll keep most folks entertained it's just up to them personally for how long that actually is.

THE GAMEPLAY

In Destiny 2 you once again assume the role of a guardian, playable as three different classes: Titan, hunter or warlock and assume the role of protector for the last city taking place after events of the first game, we see the return of characters Zavala ikora in page six shortly before the last city comes under attack by a group called the red Legion who are sort of a spin-off faction of the cabal.

This prologue serves as a means of exploring some of the basic gameplay mechanics and also setting up the general plot and despite your best efforts to stop the red Legion, they attach a device to the planet which drains all of its light causing all the guardians, the player included to lose their abilities.

In a bit of a ballsy move by Bungie, there's a pretty lengthy first couple hours or so where you play through the campaign without any kind of powers, making it a pretty generic experience. Before you eventually get ring and viewed with the travelers light and the game kicks off proper at this point it falls back into that familiar routine where you kind of fly back and forth between different planets completing story and side missions as you progress through the campaign.

Like the prior game everything split up between PvE and PvP with a Pv aspect of the game being comprised at the campaign and side missions, the strike missions and raids. PvP probably forms the smallest component of the game limited to the crucible where you'll be taken on other players in what is essentially deathmatch, Kill Confirmed and domination modes but it's the PvE component where the real meat of the game is and where most people are going to be spending their time at least until you've hit level 20 and you've finished the main story.

At heart, Destiny 2 is a shooting game and that's something it does pretty damn well just right from the get-go you'll notice how responsive and fluid the controls feel on the PC snapping into iron sights is quick and painless and all of the weapons look and sound great with a lot of visual feedback as to whether or not you're doing damage to enemies.

Weapons are broken up between a primary sign arm and a power weapon with each weapon then having its own basic stats for things like range stability handling and impact. What I think's great about all of this is that there's not really any right or wrong weapon configuration, I mean obviously there's weapons that are better than others. I've gone just as good with a submachine gun and a pulse rifle combo as I've gone with a hand cannon and a scout rifle.

You might be coming across guns like you do in a game like Borderlands where your inventory is going to be constantly full of vendor trash but you do find your guns in Destiny 2 frequently enough that things won't get all that boring, that is like I said until you at least get to level 20 and the real grind begins.

Destiny 2 has kind of simplified the player experience in a way by doing away with a multitude of stats for the player to contend with, like stamina damage and all that kind of stuff, instead you're given an average of all of these in the form of your power level. The player level also factors into this but it really seems above all else that the players power level is what defines your overall effectiveness.

Now this goes up by itself separate to the XP you gain whenever you equip better weapons or armor and certain power levels are recommended for particular missions and strikes. It is kind of misleading in a sense I mean because you might find a weapon that technically raises your power level but it might be trickier to use than a weapon that is supposed to be inferior. A good example of this is when I replaced a rocket launcher with a fusion rifle I mean sure the fusion rifle did more damage but using it was a lot trickier than the rocket launcher almost negating the rifles higher damage if that makes sense.

It does have nothing else though helped a play to ascertain the basic standing of other players and you don't really have to sit there inspecting every piece of gear they have unless of course that's how you get your jollies. Now here's where I pull my tongue out of the game's asshole and tell you the things I didn't like, yes we're up to that part already. Well much like the first game, I don't really like how the only way this game knows how to be more difficult is just to throw bazillion enemies at you at once.

Enemies don't really ever exhibit the kind of intelligence we've seen in other Bungie games like the Covenant elite scene in Destiny 2 that all just kind of stand there in one place firing at you. There's the odd enemy type that will duck behind cover or seemingly retreat when it's low on health but it’s pretty standard stuff and your success during combat just mostly depends on how quickly you can dispatch everything before your shield has to recharge and you need to temporarily retreat from combat.

Some of the side missions in the game are absolutely horrid and just as tedious and drawn-out as possible as a means of extending the length of the campaign and they always seem to end against some annoyingly bullets spongy enemy that just spawns in ads all the time for the player to deal with. The real meat of destiny 2 though comes when you've finished the main campaign and reach level 20 which will probably take you like seven or eight hours then you'll start grinding strikes raids or the crucible over and over to start getting better gear.

This is all about collecting certain items, handing them in to npcs in return for weapons and armor and this can be a slow process as an example when I was playing with a friend who was level 20 whilst I was level 17 and whilst I gained maybe 60 or so power points throughout this session, his progress was far more slow, only gaining like 3 or 4 and this is where the longevity is gonna come from because if you'r just gonna play through Destiny 2's campaign as a sort of a bam bam thank you ma'am experience, well you're not really gonna get your money's worth.

SOUND AND GRAPHICS

I've got to say Destiny 2 has to be one of the best-looking and best optimized games I think I've played, in fact pretty much in recent memory. The game runs maxed out without any stuttering or framerate drops whatsoever and that's during moments of really heavy combat with dozens of enemies on the screen at once. Astatically it’s also a gorgeous looking game with a lot of variety between the planets you visit and some stunning looking environments that you'll explore towards the end of the game.

It manages to pull off these really large and expansive environments which look barren from a distance but once you get up close to something, you'll really notice the attention to detail they've crammed into the game world. Every aspect of the game just oozes high production value right across to the sound of music and it's the kind of thing you really expect for a game that's had this much money going into it.

I think a lot of the voice acting is really good too though the characters do fall into those kinds of archetypes you'd expect. You've got Nathan Fillion playing the wisecracking cayde-6 who's often conflicting with the more Stern personality if someone like commander Zavala.

If you're not into the story in this game you might get a little bit lost because the cinematics are pretty lengthy and chock-full of exposition but if you just here to shoot things and you don't care that much about the story, well you're not going to be disappointed.

CONCLUSION

At the end of the day, Destiny 2 hasn't really shook the gaming industry by redefining what we expect to see in the first-person shooter but everything that it does do, it does very well.

The shooting feels good, the game looks amazing and it's packed full of content for the play to uncover and experience. Expansion packs are already planned for later in the year and even when they're finally released, I doubt that most people will have even scratched the surface of what Destiny 2 can offer.

During my time with the game, I played as a warlock and even with a warlock alone I could have spent hours playing around with the different subclasses and trying different configurations and whether you're more interested in PvE or PvP I think Destiny 2 can cater to both and the fact that PC version runs like a goddamn dream is just icing on the cake.
