When Dead Space 3 was released in February of 2013 it sparked a staggering controversy in the gaming community while it was praised by some press outlets most of that acclaim was quickly buried underneath a massive pile of criticism towards the title and implementation of micro transactions.

This backlash happened to such an extent that even I a fan of both previous franchise never truly considered picking the game up in the first place, just didn't feel like supporting the dumbing down of a franchise I had grown to love and I still regard to dead space as one of the finest survival horror games that I've ever played.

In this review I will talk about the single-player exclusively as I haven't had a chance to try any of the co-op yet you may want to check other reviews for information on that part of the game but from what I hear it’s pretty good.

The Gameplay

The introductory chapter takes place roughly 200 years before the events of the rest of the game you play as some researcher on some mysterious ice planet, you run around some datoria lights shooting sections.

We now move over to someone we're little bit more familiar with: Isaac Clark who makes the return as the protagonist after being introduced as a mute engineer in the first game and then transitioning over to somewhat of a talkative psycho in the second. Isaac wastes no time letting us know that he is once again undergone a transformation, and it turns out that the relationship Between him and Ellie from Dead Space 2 has since gone splits Ville and we now find Isaac hiding from EarthGov following the events of Titan Station, unfortunately for him it doesn't take very long until his past catches up.

New characters, Robert Norton and John Carver suddenly confront him with yet another mission involving the destruction of a marker, Ellie is seemingly in as well so we don't waste a time arguing and continue to escape the city with our new friends while members of the church are a unit.

Ology attacked the colony and tried to hunt us down, this is also where Dead Space 3 introduces a few of its new features, human enemies with guns and also a crouching mechanic.

it's fairly easy to condemn these additions but I surprisingly enough didn't mind having enemies shoot at me while such a change would feel incredibly strange in other survival horror games. It actually kind of makes sense here I mean unit ologists have always been a threat in the series, only that now they are not infected and it just seems rather natural that they would then fire at us in such a scenario.

This actually kind of helps with the immersion since the developers don't have to come up with some stupid reason for them not to shoot at us. The crouching, I'm certainly less fond of though it feels strange that this has an option because it simply doesn't add anything to the way the game feels it's only ever useful in these very few gun and when fighting Necromorphs, there's absolutely no point to it and with how oddly space the gunfights are.

I actually ended up forgetting all about it until I hit the Crouch button by accident considering all of this, it is at least nice to see that it is mapped to a button that wasn't used for anything in the previous entries so you can largely avoid it.

Several shredded Necromorphs and Unitologist Slater, we then board a train after putting it together ourselves and ultimately escape the city by jumping onto a friend’s spaceship the USM Eudora

From here we now try to get in touch with Ellie whose last point of contact is located in the system of ice planet, tall volantis but if there's one thing that we learn from the previous two games it's that nothing ever goes right in a dead space game so our spacecraft of course gets caught in a minefield and what follows is a rather jaw-dropping set piece involving the destruction of our ship and our team's heroic jet speed getaway through what boils down to kind of a giant intergalactic war chipper.

We then board the deteriorating CMS Roanoke and soon enough reunite with Ellie only to find out that she's actually now in a relationship with Norton. Something that he freakin never cared to tell us, what an asshole but yeah I mean all jokes aside this weird little love triangle is actually one of my least favorite parts of the game, I mean sure telling its compelling story has never really been the series strong suit, but at the very least it has so far succeeded with getting a believable atmosphere.

Controls

maxresdefault.jpg

starting off right in the beginning of the game you're going to want want to press LB to run and that can help you get to your destination as fast as possible, if you hold down RS that will show where your destination is and if you quickly tap RS and that will make you crouch.

if you press LT to aim, that will also turn on your flashlight and you cannot be shooting without aiming so there is no hip firing in this game. When you see something flashy you're going to want to press A to pick up stuff and it can also be used to climb ladders and open doors.

If you press B when you have med pack you will be able to heal yourself up and on the back of your body, there's like a little tube thing, that's your health meter.

If you press RB, that is to stomp and when you go near some crates you're going to want to stop on those and get the materials out of there.

You can also press LB to dodge out of the way of a necromorph attack and that is pretty useful.

Graphics

The graphics of Dead Space 3 varies upon the configured settings, with a good video card you can increase the resolution size from the settinngs to get good video quality, you can likewise reduce the resolution if the graphics lags your PC.

Sound

The game is best enjoyable with a headphone connected to your PC, you can hear all the movements, and the scary sound of those monsters, I prefer playing the game at nights to hear everything in detail.

Settings

in your audio settings obviously you've got your music volume sound speakers, it has 5.1 surround that works for me.
Subtitles, I'm going to want those on and for visuals I play at 2560 x 1440 that is maximum i can go here so that is a good sign,

Vsync on or off

Display mode full screen or you can go windowed full screen which a lot of people enjoy or just windowed.
