My Go-To Gear for Making Quality Content While Traveling

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

Hi Friends!

As I'm getting my packing list ready to go for Mexico - I'm thinking all about being able to make quality video content on the go. Do I need my laptop? Should I bring my expensive mic? What other gear will help me make content and won't take up too much space?

I explore all of these questions in this vlog and go over the items I always pack... and the ones that I stopped because they weren't really that helpful.

In this video I also do a before/after test with a small lav mic that I'm thinking about bringing in lieu of my regular Apogee mic. I'm curious which one you guys prefer. The lav mic definitely sounds more focused than just filming without a mic (it cuts a lot of the background noise)...but I'm not sure if I love the tone quality of it.

I hope you guys enjoy this vlog and find it helpful!

XO, Lea

@coruscate, Yes, it's vital to pick perfect pieces so that whatever resources we are taking with us will going to give the perfect results and productivity. Enjoy your travel time and stay blessed.

So, I might have missed a post, but what are you going to in Mexico? Is it a conference or are you getting some sun with friends?

A conference! (Plus definitely getting some sun 😉). I’m going to Anarcapulco which is the largest free thinkers/libertarian/anarchist convention in the world. They literally rent out an entire resort in Acapulco and thousands of like minded people get together. Should be pretty awesome! 😊

Awwwwwww, I thought Anarcapulco was the city you were going to. This looks amazing! You're going to learn all of the things!!

Yeeeaah! Can’t wait! 😃

Looks like some great gear choices for traveling light. The lav mic definitely sounded better to me and makes me think I might need to go back to using mine. No more ring light?! Haha! I still use mine on occasion. Have fun at Anarcapulco!

Hahah I totally thought of you when I talked about the ring light!

Thanks for the feedback on the lav mic. I’ll definitly bring it along. 😊

The lapel mic does sound better, or at least louder while I am listening through headphones. A larger microphone can be cool if you had someone else filming you while you interview people for the conference as it looks professional.

It depends on your goals though.

They might have microphones and stages set up etc. if they have guest speakers.

You might get away with recording on your phone too. Once again it depends on your goals. When I flew to Sydney I brought both my phone and camera (because my phone battery is unreliable). I got a mixture of footage.

I just have to edit it all together.
Have fun in Mexico!

Ooh it will be fun to see your video from Sydney!

Thanks for the feedback on the lav mic too. Good point about the bigger mic being good for interviews ... hmmmm 😊

It's important to bring the right gear for sure! Wish I was going to Mexico and maybe next year I'll be able to go...

Wish you could be there too! I’ll do my best to share updates and cool things happening at the event. 😊

Maybe next year... And the way things are going maybe things will work out nicely.

Have fun and stop into Portland sometime!

You got discord right?

The mic will really help when there is wind but when it is calm like this it isn't really needed. If you use it though you should drop the volume. Is the mic plugged into your camera or do you have an external recorder?

It’s just an inexpensive lav mic and so there are no volume settings inforortunantly. 😞 I could play around with placing it a little lower though.

And it plugs right in. 😊

Oh, I meant just when you mix audio from your camera and lav mic in the same video, like one where you're inside with a group so you use your camera's audio and then have a part where it is just you with the lav mic to balance the audio in post.

I have used a Zoom H1 to record externally, I just clap 3 times and then sync the audio in post. That way during vlogging it is possible to have less wires running from you to the camera. I can also set the camera up at a distance form me and it still works.

I´m actually very interested in starting making some videos (for DTube, of course :D ), but I´m still looking for the best gear to fulfill my needs.

Ooh that’s exciting!! Honestly - If you have a smart phone, then you are already in good shape. You don’t really need a bunch of gear when you first get started. Just try to film in the best lighting and with the best audio quality you can. For example - a windy day will sound pretty distracting and filming in a large room will sound more echoey than a small one.

There are lots of free video editing softwares out there too. If you have Apple products - iMovie actually works pretty well.

I feel like I´m 80% ready, and I´ve been searching some things that you mentioned (like the editing software). Thanks for the advice of the lighting, avoid the wind and big rooms...

Well sometimes when all I just need is my phone because for now, I am still unable to get a laptop for myself. I guess you don't wanna miss any item left

That’s the great thing about phones these days! Other equipment is nice - but you can totally still make great content without it. 😊

Ok with gear now a little bit more clear. But what will you do if you try to upload your video on dtube while traveling and it shows you some error? Also in your trips what programs do you use to process your videos?
