CausesParents give Dowry as an act of favour.Its main reason is to help their daughters to start a new life.It is given as a token of love.
Evil EffectsIn the modern times Dowry is a black spot on Hindu society.If the parents of the daughter are poor and they didn't fullfill their demands then the brides are insulted and beaten.They are forced to work as a servant.They are brunt alive.They are compelled to commit suicide.
How to check this evilAnti Dowry bill has been passed.Demanding Dowry has been made illegal but without the active support of the public this evil can't be uprooted.
As a conclusion We can say that The only way to check this problem is social awakening.You boy should realise their responsibility.Young lady should refuse to marry the young man whose parents are greedy. Without such determination the evil can not disappear.

This custom is spread across the world. While I have nothing against families helping out newly weds, demanding dowry and conditioning a marriage on it is disgusting.

No problem mate. In my country the parents and relatives also help out couples, but it is not demanded of them. Some cannot afford to and that's fine. People should be together if they complete each other, not for money. Though of course financial security is a factor as well, it shouldn't be the determining one.
