This custom is spread across the world. While I have nothing against families helping out newly weds, demanding dowry and conditioning a marriage on it is disgusting.

No problem mate. In my country the parents and relatives also help out couples, but it is not demanded of them. Some cannot afford to and that's fine. People should be together if they complete each other, not for money. Though of course financial security is a factor as well, it shouldn't be the determining one.
