SEGA has announced "SEGA FOREVER", which aims to bring the full SEGA back catalog to mobile devices for free!

The service will see SEGA games available for download on your Android or IOS device free of charge, but supported by ads. The ads can be removed for just $1.99, making this an extremely competitive offering for retro enthusiasts. Bluetooth controllers will also be supported, as will game saving. An online leaderboard will be available so your name could be up in lights if you have the chops. I fancy my chances at speed challenges on Sonic The Hedgehogs Greenhill Zone, but doesn't everyone?!

This is good timing for SEGA as retro gaming has become an increasingly mainstream hobby around the world. I'm delighted that we will be able to access Master System games as well as those from the ubiquitous Megadrive/Genesis.

Check out the trailer for SEGA Forever below:

I'm psyched about SEGA Forever. In preparation for this great offering, here are my top 5 SEGA games of all time:

5

Desert Strike
The first of the Strike series, "Return to the Gulf" was an overhead shoot-'em-up chopper game. In an unlikely and grizzly scenario, you fly a military helicopter around the desert, kicking the shit out of enemy troops. Lots of fun. Murica!

4

Phantasy Star 2
There were several Phantasy Star RPG games over the years and all are worth checking out. Phantasy Star 2 was my personal favorite. Back in the day, before Pokemon and the internet, Japanese anime style was a rare thing to encounter here in Europe, and Phantasy Star had all the exotic hallmarks of Japanese sci-fi/adventure: talking cats, apocalyptic conspiracies, romance, character building, robots, people who looked like cats, more character building, actual cats.. You get the idea.

3

Sonic The Hedgehog 2
The ubiquitous Sonic returns for an update to the highly successful first Sonic game. This time with bigger levels, better music, and a great new rev-up move. Tons of fun.

2

Thunderforce 4
This is a bitter-sweet entry for me because, I completely sucked at this game. I loved it nonetheless. A side scrolling shooter with killer graphics and an epic metal soundtrack. This was fast, fun and very, very difficult.

1

Streets Of Rage 2
There were 4 Streets Of Rage games made, but number 2 was my favorite. Simply one one of the best side scrolling multiplayer beat-'em-up games of all time. Insane soundtrack too.

Are you looking forward to SEGA Forever? What device will you be playing on, and what games will be top of your list?

I can't wait to try this. Thanks for posting

Holy crap, that is wicked! I'd gladly pay $1.99 for an ad free classic sega catalogue. Thanks for posting this, I probably would never have heard otherwise :)

I'm so excited. I might end up buying an iPad and controller especially for this.

Such a good idea! I might pick up a controller myself, my own personal tv with a full selection of video games I can play any time? It's like my 13 year old self's ultimate dream.

back to the 90's :) i still have a working Sega gamegear here

Sweet! Remember how they used to advertise that the game gear was so cool because it had a color screen vs. gameboy's classic green screen? So funny.

But why was the Gameboy so much more popular? Crazy

I think nintendo just had better marketing, and they came out with their stuff first. Mario, tetris, those classics really pushed it I think.

No effing way! I never had a Gamegear but I wanted one so bad.

DSC01865.JPG there you go

EPIC!

Sweet!

Hahaha, same here. Super randomly my grampa had a gameboy with tetris and I would play it when I went to his house, I was always so jealous of the kids on school trips who would bring their gameboys and gamegears, now I have an iphone hahaha

well i also still have a working Commodore Amiga 500 + external disk drive to many good memories of that one

Amiga. That game "Flashback" was on Amiga I think?

not just for amiga , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashback_(1992_video_game)

I loved that game. Crazy cool graphics for its time.

come to think of it i even have a working Panasonic 3DO console :)

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat.....
My childhood! It's a dream come true.
Hell yeah!!

Yeah dude! Me too. Gonna relive the best bits :)

wow ! wow! wow! this is greeeeeaaat news.grew up playing sega before playstation took over the scene.

Yeah man. I was a Sonic addict!

Altered Beast!!!!!!!

For me, it was the Mega Man of the Genesis console. I played for hours on end next to Sonic the Hedgehog, and when I was slumming it, Columns. So cool Sega is releasing all of these for free!

I feel kinda bad now for not including Altered Beast. I think it was the first Genesis game I ever played and it was pretty cool. The huge characters/sprites were previously only seen in arcade games.

Rise from your grave!!

That shit was crazy for an 11 year old hehe

Loved that game, and desert strike too. Was two crude dudes on the Megadrive, that was good fun!

Holy sh*t yes! Good memories here I come.

Back in da days ... so good memories๐Ÿ™‚ thanks

Waooo.. Desert Strike and Sonic es veryy niicee..

Those gun sounds were pretty realistic for the 90s.
