Natural Ways to Prevent Yourself From Getting Sick, Contributed by @sharingeverybite

You know the time. That dreaded moment when you get a tingle in the back of your throat. Or a sniffle that you know isn’t allergies. The moment when you can tell your stomach isn’t quite right. A sickness is coming on. Whether it’s the common cold or something a little ickier, there are a few ways to prevent it from getting really bad.

1. Get Hydrated & Nourished

Your body can’t function properly if it doesn’t have all the proper vitamins and nutrients. One of my favorite ways to get a power-packed punch of all the good stuff is through fresh-squeezed juice. Get the grossest looking (and probably tasting) thing you possibly can and make sure it has pulp—the fiber is important. Try to get one that has kale, lemon, cilantro, beet, turmeric, ginger, carrot, cucumber, etc.. I’m telling you, whatever fits in a glass, get it.

In addition to the juice, make sure you’re drinking a ton of water. Especially in the heat of summer, it’s easy to get dehydrated. That might even be the source of your sickness right there. Trust me; I’ve dealt with many a 120-degree summers in Arizona. Getting dehydrated is easy. The most commonly recommended amount of water to drink in a day is half your body weight in ounces of water.

2. Sleeeeeeep

Getting caught up in “the grind” makes you feel like you need to cram 18 hours of work into an 8-hour period. When you’re starting to get sick, resist the urge to check everything off your to-do list, help every client, and run all your errands. Instead, rest.

If you can take the day off of work, do it. One day of taking it easy might mean sparing yourself two weeks of feeling shitty as you recover from a cold. At night, do your best to get eight hours of sleep or more. It’s your body’s chance to regenerate cells and fight off whatever bug you’ve got going on.

3. Essential Oils & Other Elixirs

I became an essential oil advocate a few years ago and have been “pimping” them ever since. Nope, not selling, just a huge believer in their healing properties. At one time, I thought they were some hyped-up hippie potion, and I’m glad to be proved wrong. They’ve helped me with countless ailments, not just the common cold.

Whenever my boyfriend, family, friends, or I am getting sick, you better believe I’m busting out Thieves (a YoungLiving blend), Oregano, Sacred Frankincense, and Purification (another YL blend). There are dozens of essential oils out there for specific types of ailments. Just do some Googling to find the best one for what you’re dealing with.

You can also find some homeopathic cold remedies that work wonders for fighting off an oncoming cold. The one we use has a ton of highly-effective (and impossible to pronounce) ingredients like Gelsemium, Hydrastis, Aconitum nap, and Belladonna.

I get lots of sleep, eat mostly healthy food, exercise & yoga almost everyday & I haven’t been sick in over two years, not even a sniffle 😊

Two years, that is really impressive! Something to be said for treating your body right.

& I don’t take any pills from pharmaceutical companies or their drug dealers (drs)!

Good strategy... pharmaceuticals tend to fix sypmtoms, not root causes.

*claim to fix symptoms, most often they create new symptoms while prolonging the initial symptoms. Keeps them coming back

Excellent point. Put out one fire, start six more. Cha-ching! for the pharmaceutical companies.

I quit drinking over two years ago, and it's pretty amazing to wake up feeling not hungover every day, you'd be surprised how much some people can take that for granted. I remember wasting so many entire days just laid up on the couch, regretting the night before and generally feeling like absolute garbage. My wellness problems aren't all solved, since food has generally become my replacement vice, but energy and health are much easier to come by these days without alcohol involved.

I'm glad you were able to give that up! Sounds like it really had a grip on your day-to-day life and happiness. I believe everything is okay in moderation (except addictive drugs perhaps), but alcohol is one of those things that can be a slippery slope. Food isn't such a bad replacement! Sounds like all you need now is another counterbalance...exercise! ;)

I make sure I drink plenty of alcohol. Alcohol kills germs, inhibitions, and brain cells. What could be a better remedy for all that ails you 😉

Lol your name suits you. Could have gone with im-asmartass, lol but in any case...Sometimes, you just can't pass up happy hour when you've got the ails! Reminds me of this video (can't seem to find it unfortunately). It was something like 100+ year olds talk about how not to get sick. Half of them said to take a shot of whiskey!

Awesome name suggestion however I think it doesn’t carry the same double meaning as my existing handle. Alcohol - the precursor to penicillin!

Intelligent, instructive and informative post @communitycoin. Health is wealth. I love your post man. I need some more

"Health is wealth." So true... can't live a fulfilled "wealthy" life without a well-functioning body.

Sleeping, Eating fruits are very helpful for health.Good information

Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you so much

When I get sick, besides the holistic approaches you mentioned, honestly, nothing. I feel society nowadays is so terrified of getting ill that the first hint of not feeling well, they immediately jump to medication. Nothing wrong with medication if you really need it, but you didn't sick because you were deficient in aspirin. People don't want to take care of themselves and instead just want to pop a pill. Well, the path to good health is not that simple. If it was, everyone wouldn't be sick. The key to faster recovery when one falls ill is to take holistic approaches and just let the sickness takes it place. The body has evolved over millennia to know what to do. Trust it!

Amen to that! Besides, most pills just work to do one thing...cover up symptoms, not address the root of the problem. The only time I'll take any type of prescription is when there is absolutely no other way to fix the problem, like with strep throat when it could turn into scarlet fever without a z-pack.

I'm sure there are even ways to tackle it more naturally than that. I could go on a giant rant about how antibiotics are overused and overprescribed. They're a big reason why society's gut microbiomes are all out of balance and causing so many other health issues. I digress.... ;P

Thanks for your input on health! A good night sleep is indeed very important. At night the detox of your body has begun. The liver is even more active during the night then the day!

I didn't know that about the liver! It's such an important organ.
