I'm soooo disappointed with Adobe right now!
Why, Adobe did you not do more with the latest release? Why Lightroom Classic?
A year of waiting
Lightroom is like an industry standard for photographers around the world. We use it to keep track of our photos, edit, export and print. More advanced editing has always been done in Photoshop but Adobe has slowly but surely improved Lightrooms capabilities over the years and I have found myself having to go into Photoshop less often.
In december 2017 a new Lightroom was released. It was a year of waiting and I was hoping for a major update. The competition is fierce. Multiple new competing softwares has come to market and already existing competing apps has had aggressive updates. My expectations were high for this update!
What happened?
Adobe released a minor upgrade to Lightroom and renamed it "Lightroom Classic". The only notable features was a performance improvement and a new range selection tool. WTF!!!
What's worse is that they released a new Lightroom called "Lightroom" that is an online cloud thing. It's completely unusable for professionals as it's majorly lacking features. I'm sure they will improve it over time but the Cloud is no way near ready for my photo collection...
It is worrying that that Adobe is now putting major resources into a new Lightroom that pro photographers will not be able to use for many years to come. The name "Classic" feels like some yesterdays product now turned into a classic.
What now?
There are so many things that Adobe could have done with Lightroom during that year. So many improvements that was needed. I must say I'm loosing a bit of faith in that they will continue develop Lightroom at the same pace as other manufacturers of similar software. But there are some things I love about Lightroom...

It just came out in version 11. I tried it at version 10 but it was too slow for my liking back then. Maybe I should give that a go again.
Luminar has made great strides it seems but I haven't tried it yet. Have you?

I hated Lightroom right from the start. I had to use it because of the organisation features but I finally switched back to Aperture.
I am waiting to see what Macphun will come up with as a Lightroom alternative and maybe I will switch to that.
I also used Aperture for a couple of years. But when Apple stopped coming out with updates for it I switched to LR. Now it's LR that's not coming out with updates...
for me the biggest mistake was the name and it is more from marketing point. you are right Classic sound like well classic :) it should be Pro or something like that. and i think that the most important should be performance. i don't need for it to become photoshop. would like to know what do you think LR is missing.
Indeed, Classic doesn't make it sound like it's there they are putting their resources going forward.
What I think LR is missing/needs to do better is worth a post of its own but here are some highlights.
• Brush system needs to be reworked from the ground up
• The clone tools are not as good as in Photoshop and there is very little content awareness build in
• The Sharpness tools are rudimentary at best. Clarity creates very "unrefined" results and does terrible things to your colors. Take a look at Capture One's sharpness tools and you see what I mean could be on offer.
• Why is there no built-in support for syncing your library across multiple computers (I'm not talking about Adobe's own cloud storage) I use dropbox for this but it's a nightmare with file locks and sync conflicts etc. even though it's possible to get it to work.
I could go on, and I probably will in a longer post. :)
