Explaining STEEMIT & Bitcoin to my Mom
Recently my mother came to visit me from Georgia. I live in Maryland. I knew when she came that I would just have to tell her about STEEMIT. (It wasn't a phone conversation)
My Mom has always been a fairly open minded person and pretty creative when it comes to money. What do I mean? As a child, I remember the grocery store paying her for a huge cart full of groceries. How? Through double and triple couponing like a pro! They would end up handing her actual money!
Of course to get such great results, she spent tedious hours scouring papers and various ads. And, having me cut lots of coupons for her. Haha. Anyway, my mom has engaged in amazon mturking, user testing, and other such things for income over the years. I wanna get her on STEEMIT but so far it's going a little like this:
Okay so that meme ties more into bitcoin but you get my drift. I don't think she's entirely sold on it, yet...though, upon her arrival back to her day job in Georgia, she has apparently found out who "invented bitcoin" from the "IT guy at work". This individual apparently thinks a fellow Georgian did. LOL. So I tried to explain....
But I can appreciate that her curiousity is peaked even though the "IT guy at work" is apparently misinformed. Or maybe he is Satoshi Nakomato!
Anyway, I applaud those of you who have gotten their parents on STEEMIT. Maybe I will get her on here eventually. But until then, I think educating people about STEEMIT is a good thing. I think people need to be educating themselves on cryptocurrency in general, instead of, oh it's just some obscure thing they heard about on the news.

Great post!! My experience is this: I tell people I get paid to blog. The first question is where does the money come from. I tell them investors, kinda like the stock market. That's as far as I ever get. Do you have a better explanation?
Haha. Yea, well that's about the jist of it really. Either Peoples eyes start glazing over. Like okay you don't believe me? How do you think i paid my credit cards off (haven't gotten this far yet but will be soon!! I have faith). But i get excited about bitcoin and crypto and I think that's where i start losing people. Stockmarket explanation is a good one.
Well, I tell them that, kinda like the stock market. They then repeat again, "but where does the money come from?" In other words, they just don't get it. And they don't understand the stock market either I guess. So yes, it's kinda like this. Either you get it, or you don't. I have gotten friends and relatives started on Steem it, so it's not a lost cause. And I absolutely love it!!
Yes I loooovveee steemit. I heard of it last year but seeing as how i didn't get it at that time i just started about going on a month ago now. Like dammit, wish i had started sooner. Great to virtually meet you btw. Thx for the comments and upvotes on my posts. Much appreciated.

@paradise-found Congrats on your retirement! Whatever you did to retire at 57 that's freaking awesome. I'm 29 a lot of my colleagues think they'll be drudging away until their 70 bevause of uncle Sam. I say to heck with that. Life is too short for that kind of thinking

Dedicate this post to your mom. Then when it pays out, cash it out to the traditional currency she's familiar with, hand it to her and say, "This is yours. See? It works. It's real."

Well, I am no expert myself! Just have a general working knowledge. I learn more everyday. Everyone here on steemit even the "big dogs " here are helpful and genuine people

The big corporations can't keep us grounded if we're on here making a change on Steemit and exchanging crypto. We're just gradually moon walking out of the system with both hands elevated giving them the middle finger. Whilst listening to MJ "Smooth Criminal"of course ;D
Love this comment. I just think it's such a Stereotype at this point thinking that all people engaged in the world of cryptocurrency are part of some criminal syndicate. It is like thinking that all people walking down the street with a hoodie are criminals because the neighborhood crime watch sign displays a hooded figure
