I'm the owner of burnpost and I do reply to meaningful questions. There is a lot of comment spam that I ignore, and unfortuntely sometimes it is hard to tell the difference.

It could certainly be done that way. This way lets us avoid reducing the supply of SBD as long as SBD is overvalued, since SBD supply is determined in part by the STEEM (including SP) supply, which immediate burning would reduce. It also allows the SP to be used for downvoting spam during the interim period until it is burned.

I'd rather see it go directly to null and immediately powered down. If account was somehow hacked that steem power could be back on the market

You are correct, that is indeed a disadvantage of the current method. In my view an acceptable trade off but I respect that you see it differently.
