Wer an die Bergwelt Nepals denkt, den kommt unwiderruflich das Yak (auch Grunzochse genannt) in den Sinn. Das zottelige kuhähnliche Geschöpf bildet die Lebensgrundlage der Völker in Höhen ab 3000 Metern. In diesen Gefilden ist Ackerbau nur spärlich möglich und Milchprodukte sowie Fleisch, stellen einen grossen Anteil in der Ernährung.	To anyone who thinks about the mountains of Nepal, the yak comes in to the mind. The shaggy cow-like creature forms the basic of life to the people who populate the altitudes of 3000 meters (9800 feet). In this area, agriculture is sparsely possible and dairy and meat make up a large part of the diet.
Eine Besiedlung in der Hochthäler wäre ohne sie nicht vorstellbar.	A colonization in the high valleys would be unimaginable without them.
Nebst Milch- und Fleischlieferant dienen sie auch zur Wollgewinnung, Pflügen und als Tragetier, sind aber genügsamer kräftiger und widerstandsfähiger als Kühe, Esel und Pferd. So zu sagen die Wollmilchsau die man am liebsten erfinden würde, nur Eier legt sie Nicht.	In addition to milk and meat suppliers, they are also used for wool production, plowing and as a pack animal, but are more frugally stronger and resistant than cows, donkeys and horses. Geschichtlich gesehen sind des Yaks nächste verwandte die Büffel Nordamerikas und die Wisent Europas. Ihre Linie spaltet sich vermutlich vor 36000 Jahren von der Linie der restlichen Kuhrassen. Die Yaks verfügen über zwei zusätzliche Wirbel der Wirbelsäule, im vergleich zu allen anderen Kuhrassen und machen sie dadurch trittsicherer in schwierigem Gelände.	Historically, the yak's closest relatives are the buffaloes of North America and European bison. Their line splits probably 36000 years ago from the line of the remaining cow breeds. The yaks have two extra vertebrae of the spine, compared to all other cow breeds, making them more sure-footed in difficult terrain.
Yaks findet man zum Teil auch wild lebend in den höchsten Talabschnitten und werden nur zur Wollgewinnung, einmal Jährlich zusammengetrieben und geschoren.	Yaks can be found also as feral in the highest part of the valleys and are only rounded up and shorn once a year for wool production.
