Bug control on the HomesteadsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #homesteading7 years ago

This year has come with its share of challenges with one of them being earwigs. They got so bad that our drinking water was compromised because of the numbers that had fallen into the water and died.

We needed to come up with a solution to put an end to this bug problem.

The first thing we did was to seal our well cap to prevent further infestation. This was done easily with outdoor caulking. Next, we needed to capture as many as possible to prevent a future infestation.
We did this with an empty plastic container with some holes in the sides (so the earwigs could get in), some olive oil & soy sauce (the lure/bait).

We then put these beside the well and in our cold frames and by the next day we had captured hundreds!

Hope this helps some of you who may have experienced the same issues.

In the meantime if anyone can tell us how to keep the dog out of the garden we would be grateful.

Thanks!

What a scary situation to have your water supply compromised. Glad you are hopefully finding a solution. Keep us updated.

After we cleaned out the carcasses floating on the surface, we shocked it with chlorine and we're as good as new!

Oh that's good. I live off grid and collect all my water so if it got compromised somehow I would be in trouble. Glad it was such a simple fix.

You know the Steemit community will be here to help with any water issues you might encounter. Glad to hear you are off grid!!!

Wish I could help with the dog in the garden issue... but I had the same problem with ours. She loved being near the chamomile, lemon balm and mint.

We're lucky, she'll try to stay OFF of the plants!

Jajaja. The dog seems very tender, jajaja.
Maybe to built a fence can help or to built a small house where it can stay comfortable

She's a great dog, and never really a problem in the gardens.

Interesting technique! I've never had a problem with earwigs, but I had no idea that they'd be lured in by olive oil and soy! I guess the soy for the sweetness (the true lure), and the olive oil to get them stuck?

I'm dealing with cabbage moths right now, both the Pieris rapae and Pieris brassiceae species. I'm going to have to pick up some BT var. kurstaki to deal with it :(

BT seems to be the only way to deal with cabbage moths unless you have a class cloche covering them. Your guess is correct regarding the soy/oil combo. One gets them in and the other one keeps them there.

Yeah, I have tried 'nicer' methods. It's time to bring out the big guns now.

Good luck

I had too many snails this year in my greenhouse. They killed a lot of herbs and tomatoes.
Okay, a dog could be a bigger problem. :-)

I'm guessing once you get snails in the greenhouse they are always there?

Unfortunately, yes. I think I can influence the population, but not get rid of them. I think I have several generations living there. :-( :-(

Sounds like a family-gastropod-reunion may be in order!
