SUMMER ADVENTURES - Episode 34 - SHELTERING THORNS 4 - THE EPILOGUE

in #steemstem5 years ago

... in the second half of September ... at the very end of summer ...

... between the many thorns of the thistle plant ...

... once a very busy environment filled with many small invertebrates and their activities ...

... there is not much to see ...

... the plant has dried out ... and big flowers rich with nectar had turned into dry and fluffy seeds ...

... it's a very different world ... with some sort of post-apocalyptic atmosphere ... through this half-year on Steemit, I visited this habitat a few times and followed its changes ... so here are the links on those old posts, to complement this one and give you the more complete picture ...

                                                           * * *

... and so ... now ... let's continue through the thorns ...

... although there are not many insects to see and photograph ...

... besides these bugs - Pyrrhocoris apterus, with interesting red & black design on them ...

... they swarm here in big numbers ...

... hiding in the thorny shelters ...

... there are still many cool little details to be found ... like this seed in the beautiful light of the late afternoon ...

... or remains of the old cobwebs ...

... some of them decorated ...

... with tiny flowers that are falling from the surrounding plants ...

... in this dry, brown ambient ...

... some creatures ...

... are pretty hard to notice ...

... like this young mantis ...

... or big crickets ...

... resting in the dry calyxes that have lost the flowers ...

... sometimes ... in the same structures ...

... you can find the ever-present red bugs ... that in that context, look very much like some colorful seeds ...

... and talking of these bugs ...

... they grow fast ...

... overgrow their exoskeleton ... and so ...

... change their skin very often in this period ...

... it's a cool macro attraction ...

.... relatively easy to photograph ...

... occasionally you can see a young Pisaura mirabilis spider ...

... or a minuscule ...

... snail, crawling around ...

... the most interesting insect I saw here while preparing the post ...

... is this ...

... a minuscule bug with strang anatomy, resembling the flies or cicadas ...

... a few young grasshoppers of this very common species ...

... can be found on every plant, resting camouflaged on the dry stems ...

... and now ... with few more shots ...

... of this episode's main character - the Pyrrhocoris apterus bug ...

... is time to end this post ... and complete the life cycle of this plant ...

... as always in these posts on Steemit ... the photographs are my work ...

                                                   ... THE  END ...

Sort:

National Geographic stuff yet again. Stunning collection. Those grasshoppers look amazing. Here is my favorite grasshopper shot :) I took it in Costa Rica.
