Fungi Friday - ANOTHER LOOK UNDERNEATH THE PINES

in #steemstem5 years ago (edited)

Earlier this morning ...

(Enlargeable)

... I went for another walk ...

... in search of fresh Fungi Friday material ...

(Enlargeable)

... and just like fourteen days ago ... for that distant Fungi Friday ...

... I was exploring the small peninsula near the port of my hometown Medulin, for the most part covered with pines ... situated on the most southern part of another, larger peninsula called Istra, in Croatia ...

... this small peninsula is called Vizula ... and the whole area surrounded by shallow sea with a short and narrow passage connecting it to the rest of Medulin is a small but important archeological park with rich findings and the continuation of human settlements from neolithic period to the early Middle Ages ...

... reaching the peak in 1st and 2nd century ... with the great residential Roman villa ... built in terraces by the sea ... equipped with swimming pools, thermal area, sewerage system built in stone and lead ... beautiful intricate mosaics were found and a lot of sophisticated, precious objects from distant parts of that Roman world ....

... so in today's fungi collection ...

... you'll see more pictures of that setting ...

... just like two weeks ago ... and here is the link to that old post if you would like to compare the two ...

https://steemit.com/steemstem/@borjan/fungi-friday-under-t-1573815340

there were pine cones scattered on the ground ... and growing on them ...

(Enlargeable)

... sprouting always in pairs from the space under the scales ...

... were these small mushrooms ...  I don't know the name of the species, or other things regarding their biology ... the only thing I can offer you here are their pictures

(Enlargeable)

... and trough this series of shots ...

... I can show you that every pair is a bit different ...

(Enlargeable)

... it's funny ... I almost gave them names while shooting these photographs ... :D so distinctive were their '' personalities '' ...

... besides those little cone mushrooms (WARNING! NOT A OFFICIAL NAME, JUST THE SILLY ONE I GAVE THEM FOR THIS OCCASION) ... practically all the other species ...

... were different ...

... and I found some edibles this time ...

(Enlargeable)

... some medium - sized parasol mushrooms, ad example ...

... like these ...

... and then ...

... a few, very surreal or SF looking, giant ones ...

(Enlargeable)

... I'm not sure on what I like more ... eating or photographing these mushrooms ...

... and they are even more strange and photogenic when in this phase ...

... when the large umbrella is not spread and completely developed ...

(Enlargeable)

... they look a bit like some alien thing in the landscape ...

... there were many ...

(Enlargeable)

... puff mushrooms ...

... of various shapes and sizes ...

(Enlargeable)

... some were growing in groups ...

(Enlargeable)

... some in pairs ...

... and some - alone ... all of these puffs are edible before the firm white tissue turns into soft and brown and then finally becomes the spore dust ... on the next photograph ...

(Enlargeable)

... you can see a group of puff mushrooms ready to be picked up for culinary reasons ... and blurred in the background ... is a pair of those small '' cone mushrooms'' ... this scene illustrates the abundance of fungi in this place ...

... the floor was covered  with pine needles and various interesting mushrooms ...

... one of the changes that occurred in between the two posts ...

... is the duration of the daytime ...

... the days are every day shorter ... and that ... in combination with mostly cloudy weather ...

... creates a pretty dark ambiance ...

... especially ...

... under the large old pines ...

... luckily some colorful mushrooms give a breath of colorful vivacity to that atmosphere ...

(Enlargeable)

... and ... with the temperature being actually pretty high for this part of the fall ...

... you can still see some lovely flowers in this midday dusk ...

... these tiny fruits ...

... are also a nice decoration ...

... on one pine cone there ...

... I even saw a beautiful green spider ... they are usually fast and always running on the open, looking for shelter under the rocks or fallen leaves ... but in these autumnal conditions ...

(Enlargeable)

... this one was laying still on the cone ... in the obscurity under the tree ... and I had enough time for a good look and a couple of shots ...

... then I went out of the little pine forest ...

... and continued my walk ...

... through the open meadow ...

... by the sea ...

... where the archeological attractions are ...

... there on the walls ...

... I saw a small group of ants ...

(Enlargeable)

... is rare to come across ants, active on the surface, in this part of the year ...

... there ... near the walls ...

... I found also this mushroom ...

... with a little eaten part ... that look like a window with a view on the bottom side of the umbrella ...

... when viewed from a distance ... the pale mushroom on that short green grass, in that a bit dark atmosphere ... looked like something from the '' Alice in Wonderland ''  ... at least to me ... :D but then ... I  easily fall in that kind of surreal imagery ... maybe this looks just like a normal mushroom on some ordinary lawn ...

... further in the distance ... I noticed a buzzard ... resting on the small tree ...

... and when I gazed at the sea ...

... there was this small grebe ... I don't know the name of the species ...

... and soon another one surfaced ...

... a short walk along the coast from that point ... I saw another aquatic bird ... and also here, I can't tell you the exact species ...

... and also this time ... :D another one soon appeared ...

... these mushrooms ...

... were growing surrounded by some large thorny leaves here on the meadow ... they always grow like this ... looks like there is some sort of interesting  connection between the fungi and the plant ...

... nearby ...

... I saw these small fragile mushrooms ...

... on their way to become ...

... a small quantity of black goo ... before disappearing ...

... and among those dissolving umbrellas ...

... I found another spider ...

(Enlargeable)

... at the edge of the meadow, near the first pine trees ... I collected some of these Agaricus edibles ...

... and around the trees ...

... these very common and numerous ... Boletus Granulatus mushrooms ... that are also edible ...

.... this one has been partially eaten by some other creatures not me ...

... what follows ...

... is a series of shots ...

... a pile of photographs ...

... depicting ...

... various other mushrooms ...

... that ...

... I encountered today ...

(Enlargeable)

... and on which ...

... I can't tell you ...

... nothing worth mentioning ...

... but ...

(Enlargeable)

... I think ...

... that they are still worth a look ...

(Enlargeable)

... becouse images ...

... are also a cool source ...

... of information ...

... at least you'll know ...

(Enlargeable)

... that these mushrooms exist ...

... and that they look ... well :D ... like they look ... like you see them here on these photographs ...

... and maybe this pile of pictures will convey the idea ... of how cool the biodiversity is ...

(Enlargeable)

... and how inpoverished ... how boring and dull ... this planet will be ...

... without all these life forms ...

... and now ...

... I'm really tired of these image uploading ...

... so bye bye :D THE END

As always in these posts on Steemit, all the photographs are made by me.

Some of those do look positively alien and as for the black goo, well it's possibly the finest black goo I've ever seen!

Exception. It is an exceptional post. Very happy see this.

Thanks :) Glad that you like the post

what can I add to your post?
looks like this pine forest is a very special place, 150% consisting of the mushroom various species. they are probably on a mission there!

this picture - shrooms attack the cones - is close to complete impossible to see here where I live. it was a nice walk, a few images are superb, and all the rest are simply a nice walk to watch and pass by.

Thanks :) yes is a nice place even in this a bit boring part of the year, is sheltered from the winds and much more humid than the surroundings, often misty, and mushrooms really love to grow there.
