Travels With Connie #37 Bisbee Arizona

in #motorcycle7 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

Bisbee, Arizona is a quirky small town with a population of under 6000. It wasn't always that way, in it's mining heyday it had near double that population. The mines all closed in the late 50's and the town almost ground to a halt. An enlightened mayor and Phelps Dodge corporation secured a Federal Grant to convert the economy to tourist based.

It worked. Today Bisbee hosts a thriving population and the businesses include not only restaurants and galleries but working artists have studios there. It is definitely a fun place to visit and eat.

Entrance of the Copper Queen Hotel

Bisbee is built on hills. In the early days there were gold and silver mines right in the city. In 1917 Phelps Dodge started the Copper Queen Mine right in the town. It's an open pit mine and pretty spectacular.

Bisbee Street

One of the charms of Bisbee is that there have been no buildings built here since the 1920s. Every single building is 100 years old.

The Copper Queen

Bisbee has always been the home of athletes. Warren Field was built for the 1910 Baseball season and is still in use today, making it the longest serving baseball park in the US.

Bisbee hosts the race of 1000 steps every year. A 5k run that features over 1000 steps as a part of the course. They also host the 'Ice Man' competition where contestants race up 150 stairs carrying a 10 pound block of ice with antique ice tongs.

The Bisbee Mining Museum, the Former Phelps Dodge Office

Bisbee is a fun place to just walk around and sample the local life. One of my favorite coffee shops on earth is there, and the Breakfast Club (in a former glass factory) serves as good a meal as I know of.

The Newest Building in Bisbee?

Bisbee is just a great outpost in the Southeast part of Arizona. It's off the beaten path, but well worth the journey. A night in the Copper Queen is a night to remember.

It's only about 20 miles from the border and a small crossing at Naco, AZ. There are suburbs of Bisbee that offer modern motels and convenience, but I recommend the old town for lots of fun.

Good evening, hello beautiful posts, you have my support greetings

@bigtom13, I love old architecture. They seem to have a certain elegance that is lacking in all the chrome and steel we have today.

Bisbee is obviously a beautiful place to visit. All houses are 100 years old! That's a wawu!

Beautiful photos too. Would have loved to see you on the bike though.

I started reading your posts because you're a @qurator member and I have been following along with your travels with Connie posts. You always share some of the best places and locations.
