Five From The Seventies Part 1

in #music6 years ago

I've been threatening to make this post for days. The first half of the 70s is my wheelhouse. I was 19 when the decade started. The bubble gum music was just going strong, but I'm a rocker, so you get what you get.

All this comes about due to a challenge by @slobberchops in an effort to show his daughter about the 'old music'.

The Rules:
Link FIVE singles from the 1970’s and let us know why they are memorable to you.
One from 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974.
Make sure they are not too obscure, we are trying to teach the younger readers what was good, not about old ‘B-sides’.
State the year of release, we are trying to educate people!
Use the tag #seventieschallenge
Add a Wikipedia link to each song so the uneducated can learn a little about the song. If there isn’t one available, then choose something a little more popular.

The first lick (1970) comes from the Fogerty Brothers AKA Creedence Clearwater Revival.

1971 Was a quiet year in Rock n' Roll. Except for a couple of British Bands. The 'Zep' released Stairway to Heaven but for my money it was all about the Who Boys. Won't Get Fooled Again

1972 was a hot year in Rock. Jackson Browne burst on the scene, Bill Withers was HOT, Soul was on the rise. But children, this is a rock and roll lesson so it's gotta be The Rolling Stones Tumbling Dice. The Stones Honky Tonk era was in full swing, and it partly helped fuel the rise of Southern Rock. 1972 was a good year, I turned 21 and don't remember too much of it...

I date the start of the Southern Rock movement to 1973 and this song by Marshall Tucker Band. Rambling man featured songwriter Dickie Betts (who was to die soon after) wailing on his trademark red guitar.

In 1974 a young Mr. Clapton was fusing various genres. Blues, Rock, Reggae. My choice for the year is the classic "I Shot the Sheriff" a repop originally done by Bob Marley.

There you have it. My list from the early 70s. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, but the decade sort of demands eclectic. Thanks @slobberchops, this is fun.

If you decide to take a turn at this challenge be sure to use #seventieschallenge as a tag. It's that easy.

Although I wasn't born until a decade later I've always thought the 70's had great music. You picked some good ones to. A nice variety of sounds. I love The Who, that song is a jam. But I also really like the Ramblin' Man song.

One of my best friends ever has requested Won't Get Fooled Again for his memorial service :) He considers it THE alltime best.

What an awesome selection, I think for me the seventies is the decade which music resonates with me myself, I often end up on 70s stations or playlists

I agree. Most of my playlist comes from the 70s, with a couple notable exceptions. Glad you liked this list.

Maybe it’s a sign of our age 😎

Very nice! Great picks. Though I was born after these years, the 70's is really a quite special time for me music-wise. There is just so much good stuff that came out of here. I once posted a question that asked if you could only ever listen to one decade of music the rest of your life but any genre within that decade which would you choose. For me it would be close tie between the 70's and 80's.

I think I'd have to go with the 70s. In spite of disco and bubble gum, the music world moved on. Rock, Soul, Funk, Blues, Jazz all had significant growth and intensity.

oh my gosh....just seeing these pictures throws me back into so many memories. Crazy....Bill Withers, Marshall Tucker, such fun times! Great selections @bigtom13!

It was great fun doing that list. Though it took me an extraordinary amount of time, I had to listen to every nominee to decide the 'best'. Thanks for stopping by.

Great choices and fine execution of the challenge, you nailed it.

Thanks. I was right there as the music came to us, not hearing it later. This is a fun challenge for me.

awesome Tom 🌸

Thank you.

This is a grand walk down memory lane with music, definitely will join in with this fun @bigtom13 love the selection.

I love music in general and the seventies specifically. For what ever reason it seemed to be a decade of change across all genres. An amazing time.

According to Wikipedia Dickey Betts is still alive.

Not only that, I had him in the wrong band. He started out with Duane Allman. I've carried that bit of wrong information around with me for better than 40 years.

Not the band, I know better than that. That is just pure error on my part.

Thanks. It's not what I don't know that bites me on the ass, it's what I do know that's wrong. This is a perfect example.

The Weasel marvels that he's still alive at all -- having been married five times. Maybe you can relate. (Two is about the limit for both of us -- Cw & me. I'd still be w/ #1, had things worked out differently. All that mess in between is just too damn much hard work.)

It's not what I don't know that bites me on the ass, it's what I do know that's wrong.

Been there. Done that. Not pointing fingers!

Oh, I know that. My thanks is genuine for correcting a 40 year error. That's a lot of being wrong :)

This is a very interesting initiative, to show to the youngest what was heard in our youth is a moment of connection, of link between two generations. I think it's an excellent selection, bigtom13.

It's pretty exciting that Slobberchops daughter requested the knowledge (she's on Steemit also) and he responded with this challenge. I really like the format!
