I'm not a witness but have been following the issue closely,
0.8.3 - now 0.8.4 makes the most sense, from an ideological standpoint especially now that the numbers are out.... you can't argue with the data. 0.8.2 does not make much of a wide short term impact. The contentious changes (0.8.2) also really make no real long-term impact aside from dividing the community on ideology and alienating a couple of whales.
I used to support retroactive changes from the beginning. I never had the impression the rules would be set in stone before 4th, in fact they were changed with 0.4.0 and noone complained. I also don't believe that anyone would've acted much different under whatever rules, wang was the best player in both systems anyway.
What made me change my opinion is solely the announcement of some of the affected whales to start acting in a way that hurts the community as a whole.
