Hedgehog in the garden

in #hedgehog7 years ago

I took this tonight. The little fella has been visiting our garden but this is the first time it was light enough to capture any video.

I think it is thanks to his nightly patrols that our wild strawberries are doing so well. He'll be keeping all the slugs under control! Hedgehogs are nocturnal and will patrol an area of about a mile every night. Our garden is on his route, he may even have his home in our garden.

Sadly hedgehog numbers are in decline in the UK but gardens can really help them. You just need to give them a hand;

A wild patch, no poison, cover, a woodpile and a means to gain access. I love them and could watch them for ages.

I hope you enjoy the clip.

Hello my friend
I hope you enjoyed this visit
Watching the video
Happy day to you

Happy day to you too bud! Thank you.

Thanks my friend for the kind words

Cool footage benjojo as one barely sees them during the day

I know! So lucky :) I love the little chap in your clip! Adorable!

hehe isn't it? You should make sure to keep some good hiding spots, such as heaps of leaves, for the little fellow, so he has it comfy at your place. But your garden seems to offer enough good spots.

Oh yes, totally. There's a pile of wood under a hedge that never goes anywhere. There's plenty of leaf litter and hedges and two sheds he can get under.

Sounds like he is there to stay ;)

I really hope so. Maybe he'll show us a trail of little ones someday soon.

Make sure to create a GIF then with the little fellows :D

Such helpful and cute creatures, sadly in decline. I envy you seeing one, never seen one during the day. We have lots of badgers around my area. God, they make a noise at night!

I know, they are so important to a healthy environment. Badgers! I love them too. You'll have to post some footage of them if you can. I'd love to see one. I thought they were quite!

I have tried to catch them on video but they are like ninjas - you just catch a fleeting glimpse as they scuttle off. Quiet? Not when they fight. Imagine a cat being strangled...a little deeper but it's pretty close

Ahhhh that's frustrating! :)......and the noise sounds very freaky.

It is indeed. It actually woke me up one night, I thought my cat was actually being strangled :-/

I think that would wake anyone! :)

We regularly have a visitor like yours and he really helps my hostas look so healthy! Please check out my photos and posts - I think you will like them. Will follow you

Cool!! I'm going to check out your blog now! Thank you.

i use to have some hedgehogs in my garden a few years ago that was at another address,i had a whole family, i used to put cat biscuits and water out for them every night , i remember one night i sat outside and had some coffee ,you could here them in the bushes ,they sound as if they have asmath they were waiting for me to go so they could get there biscuits, they get fed up waiting and rushed out thinking fuck this for a laugh and got stuck into there biscuits i felt great,as there very reclusive, anyway they weren't bothered buy me ,they knew i was there friend, they disappeared after we got some new neighbours in who burnt things in the garden,no doubt scared off by them.

A whole family, that would be dam fine. I have never heard about cat biscuits before. It would upset me quite a bit if my neighbor's activities drove the animals away.

yes hedgehogs love cat biscuits or you could easily get them some hedgehog food but cat biscuits are just as tasty.

it did upset me as i complained and told them what they were doing to the wildlife.

I hope he stays, they are fascinating creatures. Sadly, most of those seen are by the side of a road. I have loads of slugs in my garden.
Lovely post.

Thank you. It is so sad to see them flattened all over the road. I wish all roads could have little bridges and/or tunnels to enable animals to avoid us and the space in between their habitat.

They actually do have little tunnels in some places that go under the road...not sure how they're supposed to know that though.

I think you are right. I guess you need more of them so they can't miss one of them. We should build more whatever and allow more wild places in our public spaces.

I totally agree before we lose all of our wild animals. I have a fox that comes through my meadow. I used to have rabbits, but not seen one for a couple of years. We also have deer in the forest in front of my cottage, and loads of beautiful birds. I love wildlife.

Sounds like you live somewhere beautiful....the kind of place I'd like to end up sooner rather than later! I should have been a hobbit. The shire rocks my world!

Mine too. I live in quite an isolated area. Just a few cottages and farmhouses scattered around. I love it.

Sounds perfect :)

They are aren't they :)

ha ha nice video sharing.
Upvoted it :)

Cool little helpers, and totally agree, creating habitat for beneficial animals and insects is effective at controlling pests. Fun clip, thanks for sharing.
