Life's great patterns are few in number but omnipresent in nature. The tree and the spiral repeat themselves time and time again, shaping the universe around us; the former forming root systems, our blood vessels and nerve cells, cracks in the pavement and lightning bolts cascading from the clouds; the latter can be seen in the shell of a snail or the shape of a distant galaxy turning with little intention at the fringe of our awareness.
