Ragtag Garden, Part 4

in #gardening9 years ago

There has been some noticeable growth for the beans and the cabbages had a surprise for me.

As always, though, we'll start at the beginning and work our way around.

Zucchini

No huge changes here, but I did want to get a closer look at the 'runt'. That silverish 'fuzz' in the center is the edge of the new leaves it's putting out. I think it's going to survive. Sweet!

Tomato

This guy is getting a little taller. It might just reach the second rung on the cage by this weekend. We're supposed to have a good warm-up, into the 90's by next Monday. I'm betting it'll love that!

Sweet Banana Pepper

Still haven't excavated that extra bag of dirt. Probably tomorrow or the next day, because of the rising temps. The plants may like it, but it tends to slow me down. In the meantime, I'm watching that blurry brown blob in the center of the right hand plant to see if it's starting to grow it's first pepper. Soon. Soon...

Pole Beans

Apparently there was a growth spurt yesterday. They are taller than the rim of the bucket!

Peas

These little guys are really happy and filling out quickly. I'm thinking about a small addition to the rigging – across the front of the buckets. There's not much support for the ones in the front of the middle bucket. I think a piece of twine or two around the upright orange poles will be a nice little assist and they could reach it in a day or so.

Cabbage

These little stinkers (pun intended) surprised me again. The first surprise was that they weren't brussels sprouts. But, anyway, back to the story... I was was seeing if there was room for some more dirt. I thought I had a dozen, four in each bucket. (Yes, I know that's crowding.) After a double-take, I confirmed the middle bucket has FIVE plants. Another stowaway. And I didn't even WANT cabbage this year. Sigh...

Brussels Sprouts

All the brussels sprouts are at or above the rim of the buckets now. I think they're filling out, too. That could just be wishful thinking. I really could go back and check prior pictures, but I like this version, so I'll stick with it for a while.

It's looking great! Wow! Today I had to raise all my basil because my hens discovered it. haha I posted a video on my account today of one of my hens being spoiled even if she is a garden volture at times :)

Thanks! It's coming along...

Those hens sure do keep you on your toes! I'll have to check the video. Sounds fun!

lets use #containergardening :)
I noticed that the tomato is just in open air
doesn't it get phytophthora ? or white flies?

I'll try to remember that tag. Very useful!

So far no pests on any of the plants. I've grown tomatoes in this area before & don't remember a fly problem. My problems are generally user-generated (that would be me) by over/under watering, going on vacation in the middle of harvest (yes, duh) or unforeseen circumstances (like hubby breaking his hip). I think the bugs are afraid of me. Lol!

It is so late when I get caught up online and with my time zone ahead of you, sorry Deb, for being behind....

I do a drive by voting on your stuff like twice a week usually if I am behind on votes so it looks like this LOL...

LOL! Sometimes I do that, too. The more folks we follow, the more we have to tend and it can get overwhelming. Just do what you can and let the rest go.

Your artwork and ideas are so good Eddie.

I love the progress how you took us along on the journey here, it looks like a perfect 10 back there now, I am really impressed.

Got my tomatoes and hot peppers in the ground finally today, with some help from someone since I cannot do much.

Thanks, bud. I still have a bit to go yet, but the end is definitely in sight for the revamp. I really did a number on my shoulders today using the loppers. (Still working on that post.)

Yay on getting yours in! It's so great to have fresh produce that handy and know it's healthy.

It is currently getting a nice natural rainshower bath of #chemtrails mixed in with the rest of the pollution.

I cannot wait to hear your comments on my Facebook wallet post LOL

Awesome post, my dream is to own acres of land so I can grow my own crops and stay away from the poisonous grocery stores

Thanks! The peace of mind in eating what you've grown yourself is priceless. There are lots of folks here who are way more invested in that than me, obviously, but every little effort helps.

If you have a couple of extra buckets available, you could dig a cabbage or 2 out of each bucket and plant them in the extra buckets. If you dig out a lump of dirt with the roots of each plant, it shouldn't hurt them.
Those beans are really growing fast! Mine haven't come up yet. I expect a couple more days and they'll be starting to come up.

Yup, I do have several more available and probably enough dirt to transplant. I think I see how they do for now AND how I feel after ripping out more weeds/vines. Those dang things kick my butt!

No kidding on the beans. Lil buggers are fast! Fingers crossed yours show soon. It's so hard to wait.

Thanks for sharing,

#redfish love it🐠

You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!

Lol! For someone who might not have wanted cabbage, you are sure going to be up to your elbows in it soon!

Love your ragtag garden!😊

There's got to be some rule that dictates that the exact proportion you don't want something, it shows up in the same measure and then some.

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the adventure!

I'm going to call that phenomenon the "Cabbage Conundrum" from now on in your honor.😊

Lol! That'll work!

Can I adopt the cabbages? ^.^

One is spoken for, but the rest are up for grabs. Honestly, when I saw that extra one in there, I just had to laugh!

maybe you blinked when you're counting and missed the other cabbage.. haha. Are you planning to transplant those cabbages to a separate pot?

Put labels next time.. lol so you wont mistake cabbage for a brussel sprouts again. lol :D

Two were snuggled up in the original sleeve and it wasn't until they've grown a bit that I could see it was two. Sneaky. And they're staying as is other than adding some more dirt. We'll see how they do...

They WERE labelled clearly as cabbages. My boo-boo was being in a hurry, not READING, but only glancing at the picture. Had to make a second trip to get the sprouts.
