Cooking for MomsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #food7 years ago (edited)

So today my Mom has been feeling under the Weather. So as a good son of my Mom I stepped in to help with the cooking.

When I stepped in I completely forgot that today was Tuesday.

You must be thinking what's the importance of it being Tuesday. The thing is almost 80% of Indian families have a day fixed in which they do not eat anything non-veg and among those 80% families there are 30% families who doesn't even eat Onions on that Day.

I fall under that category. Now I can cook decent but cooking without Onion is rather hard for me.

I am no Masterchef.

But I have already stepped up so I can't just back down.

In lunch Rice is almost a must have item and that's easy to cook so I did the rice first.

Next I went on to cook some Saak kind of like a Salad. This was easy to Oakland I had to do was cut the Saak leaves into pieces and fry them with some salt, dried chillies and lemon juice.

The next item was the hardest one. It was Ribbed Gourd with poppy seeds. First of all I don't like dicing vegetables but I had to do it so here is the after product.

image

Now came the hard part I had to grind the poppy seeds into a paste and I couldn't use a mixer grinder I had to use our age old traditional grinder. It took me almost an hour to finish it.

image

Then all I had to do was cook them under a light flame and let them mix in.

image

Finished all these and then I thought why not make something fried. So I made some Potato Fries.

When all this was happening my Mom was thinking that we have to stay hungry in the Noon😁.

Here is the finished Array of food.

I hope you guys like this post of mine.

The poppy seeds..., I have not tried in my curry yet -you just visited my Moong Dal/Mung Bean curry recipe :) and I followed you here lol. What kind of flavor does that add to the dish?

The poppy Seeds were for another Dish.

It was paired with the Ribbed Gourd.

Poppy seeds Itself doesn't have much flavour to it but when paired with simple salt and Chilies it gives a nice feel to the mouth.

Caution: It's addictive so should keep it in low quantities.

Ah, ok.

Really? The poppy seeds themselves are addictive?

I am from West Bengal India.

Right now I stay near Siliguri which is on the North Side of West Bengal but I am originally from the South Bengal and all my relatives are hooked on Poppy Seeds they have poppy seed Dish every day even though Poppy seeds are expensive.

Isn't this addiction?

Oh wow, yes- that is crazy. I did not know one could get addicted to the seeds. But yea, that's addiction... Sorry to hear about this

Nothing to be sorry about it.

It's tasty too. Hehe

Your post shows me how wonderful Steemit is. You cooked for your mom, that's what my son @exyle does also, but the food you cooked is unfamiliar to me (except the rice of course). So reading your post I learn about your food, and I like to learn about foreign cooking. So thank you, upvoted and followed.

Haha I don't know why, but was assuming this was indian food. Looks really good too and that's quite the array of food!

It is Indian food indeed.
