Why is the Bermuda Triangle so mysterious???

The Bermuda Triangle , also known as the Devil's Triangle, is the popular name given to a triangular region of the Atlantic Ocean off the south-east United States.  In this small part of the world, for some unexplained reason,  more than 50 ships and 20 aircrafts have vanished without leaving any trace at all and over 1,000 live lost in the past two hundred years.  This area is bounded by Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda.  The triangle extends from 25 to 40 degree N latitude and 55 to 85 degree W longitude covering an area of 3,9000,000 sq. km.

In 1750, three Spanish treasure ships disappeared and on 23rd March, 1973, a 20,000 freighter, the 'Atma', vanished here but no trace of any wreckage, or of survivors has ever been found.

Even the plans are not spared.  On December 5th, 1945, five U.S.  Avenger torpedo bombers, with plenty of fuel, took off on a routine training from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  The last thing the control tower heard was a strange radio message, that their instruments were going crazy.  A sea plane sent in for search operations also vanished.  A more recent loss has been that of the U.S. nuclear submarine, 'Scorpion', in May 1968.

There have been several attempts at unraveling the baffling mystery.  Some scientists are of the opinion that violent storms or downward air currents destroyed these ships and planes, and that the ocean currents carried the wreckage away.  Some others maintain that there is a strong magnetic field in this area which cuts off the radio signals. However, till today no one has been able to put forward a convincing answer.
