Getting noticed on Steemit: A guide supported by research.

Eight days ago, which is an equivalent of a century ago on Steemit, I conducted a survey to showcase the potential of how crowd-sourcing information from different Steemit users could help new Steemians navigate the difficult learning curve involved in Steemit.
Due to the lack of activity, I will be publishing the data for this. I am hoping that those who are just starting off on Steemit will find it useful. As such, here are the results for the question.
Do you prefer a long article or a short article?
More than 50 % of the respondents pointed out that they prefer short articles. Below is a visualization of the data generated via Google forms:
This is expected as many are likely browsing through the pages quickly upvoting posts that would likely garner large returns. As such, if one were to evaluate a post, a short article is preferred.
So what does this mean for someone who has just started writing? This means if possible, do write lesser than a thousand words. Although, being a writer myself, 500 words is better for me to get my thoughts across as compared to having less than 500 words. If you go below the 500 word count, you may not have enough time to pen your thoughts effectively on a certain topic.
In addition, this also means that if you have just started off on Steemit, long articles does not automatically mean good results. As such, keep it concise and keep it brief, if you have a lot to write, maybe consider dividing it up to several different topics. That way, you would not have to crack your head on what to write the following day.
What makes you want to click on an article?
Now that you have an idea of the length of your article, how do you get noticed? A few pointed out that the title is that one thing that makes someone want to to click to read your article. The second most important thing that was pointed out was the leadpic, which means that the first picture that you place in your article should be one that is attractive.
Here is a visualization of the chart:
As such, when writing an article make sure that the title is interesting, perhaps even controversial to attract readers. In addition, the picture attached should serve a similar function too.

The problem
Here's the problem to this research, there were a grand total of 12 respondents. This means that the results from this study is not reliable. If you have been on the Steemit platform for long, you know that some of the results from the survey are common knowledge. To increase the reliability of the findings above, one user was kind enough to provide a more detailed account of how to start writing on Steemit.
Here are a few key points:
- You need friends, get yourself into a community as soon as possible. Community gets you followers, more followers equals more upvotes.
- Enjoy writing for your followers. People can tell if you put effort in your work.
- Luck plays a big role, unfortunately.
- If you have no control over luck, no one notices your work. Keep doing what you are doing by pushing out quality content.
- Time is a factor, so try to make it worthwhile for people who are reading your article.
- It's a social network. Be social, interact.
Some of the statements pointed out by this user does complement the findings found above, thus giving a better picture of how one can start off their Steemit journey.
Conclusion
Ultimately, this is not enough. There's still so much to investigate, imagine if we can use the combined knowledge of all those who have been on the platform to help others who are new. The good thing about this is that it provides one with multiple ways to succeed and less ways to fail.
I do not deny that the findings in this article was rather minimal. However, I hope that people can see what research like this can do. I will continue doing this in hopes that it will help others and I would try not to talk merely from my own experience because I do not want to give potentially bias opinions, but opinions that are confirmed as well by others on Steemit.
I hope that you would continue to support my research not by upvoting, but by resteeming this so that others can benefit from this. In addition, you can also help by posting questions of your own in the comments below. I will use it in the next survey. I hope this has helped you!
@alvinauh, this is super interesting research! (Sorry I'm just commenting now)... I think it would be worth repeating this survey every couple months to see how the trends have changed. Each time you'll have more survey takers as well.
Thanks for compiling this thoughtful work. I'm going to send this to a few folks who are new to steemit and figuring out what post-structure is most effective.
Thank you, I'll be running the survey again. I reckon I should attach some kind of reward to get more people responding. The problem with this is that it has to reach a larger audience to make it more reliable. Will continue keeping this up! Do you have any questions that you think should be added to the survey?
I agree, this is a good survey to repeat often, I know I would participate had I seen it and I would circle back for the results also.
A team, a community or a group is definitely going to help a lot! I have experienced being kinda "alone" when I just got started... It can be super demotivating when you "see" nobody or near to nobody come and visit your posts... super sad...
Being in a group, a team, a community, the fun begins... you have friends to interact and engage with... sharing and exchanging thoughts...
That is very true. It would be great to have brainstorming sessions, i suppose that's what myach is for =)
But then when a group grew BIG... I will start to back off... Coz too many in the group sometimes scare me off... as I am not able to engage in every conversation... tend to be lost in the middle of the messages... =_=|
Reminds me of a particular group haha
which group? don't say here... DM in Discord lah...
