An Exercise in Aperture and Depth of Field.

The inspiration for this weeks theme comes from a post, read sometime over the past few days... but one that I'm unable to locate right now (rolls eyes). I would like to give credit where credit is due so I'll keep looking and update this section asap.

Edit: Found it > Photography Tutorial - Photography for Beginners by @hetty-rowan

Second Photo (Really wanted to add aperture settings here but my camera didn't record them... hmm)

Over the past few days, I've read many, many posts that caught my interest and one of those posts was a photography lesson about using aperture, depth of field and getting familiar with the manual settings on your camera; something I've been meaning to do for a while now.

The author of the 'lost' post invited their readers to spend some time experimenting with different the manual settings in order to get a better understanding of how aperture works... and feeling like a bit of a challenge, I felt inspired to use this as my photography theme for the next week.

Both these photos were taken late yesterday afternoon, under an orange sky caused by bush-fires and smoke; but rather than pointing my camera directly at the sun, I decided to hide behind some trees and have the glowing sky peeking through the leaves and branches.

First Photo

My position worked well as cover but as you can see in my first photo, using the auto settings resulted in a really busy photo with everything in focus and no distinct focal point.

Remembering the lesson, I bravely changed my settings from Auto to A and pointed my camera towards the sun, once again. To get the effect I was looking for, I needed something in the foreground to focus on... and in hindsight, I wish I'd spent the time looking for a more interesting leaf but, you get that.

Anyhoo, apart from the plain foreground leaves, I'm pretty happy with the results... it reminds me of a photo I took last year with a beautiful bokeh background and I've been wanting a reason to recreate that photo so I know I'll be trying this again.

Until next time... xxx

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post, I really do appreciate your time.

And remember to keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're thinking...!

slightly confusing with your second photo being the first photo (in the post) but I think I get which one is which - your second photo (but first appearing in the post) turned out nicely I think, the orange color comes through way better and there is a pleasing contrast between the blurry orange and the in-focus green leaf. I think you are right, a bit more of the leaf in the foreground would have been a stronger composition. Still, a good experiment and encouraging first results :) Cheers

EDIT btw you can see the camera settings in the image metadata, you can use a metadata viewer like http://metapicz.com and upload the image and see all the camera settings :)

Thanks so much for your comment and yes, I can see that it probably was a little confusing to have the photos switched around... although, in my defense, I only switched so that the 'nicer' photo would be at the top of the post... but, I keep that in mind next time.

Thanks also for the link, I'll check that out later today; my camera was originally set-up to display this info in the file properties but I think I've hit the wrong button or reset something back to default. (as I noticed that I'm not shooting in RAW format anymore either...?)

Lastly, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your suggestions and will definitely take your advice on board.
