ARTICLE | 3 Amazing games that were made by just ONE person

Nowadays it is not uncommon for hundreds of developers to work together on one game. Particularly impressive, however, are the titles, which were made by only one person.I will introduce you to three such games or maybe you already know some of them

Based on a puzzle from his childhood, he developed a program in which blocks fall from above, which the player then has to put together in rows. Today, this idea has sold over 100 million times - the speech is of course Tetris. Tetris is one of the most famous games of all time and has received numerous portals and versions. 

And yet, the basic game was developed by just one person.   Tetris proves that you do not need huge studios with hundreds of developers to create a successful game. Often a good idea of just one person is enough. And that is exactly what this article is about. 

Let's introduce you to three games that have been developed on their own - or at least for the most part!

Minecraft (Markus Persson) 

A world that consists only of blocks: Minecraft appeared in 2009 and appealed with its gameplay to this day to millions of people.

Perhaps Markus "Notch" Persson is something like the more modern Paschitnow. After all, it is also a game with blocks, with the difference that we then create houses and tools and mechanisms from it. With Minecraft, the Swede has answered the question of what it would be like if a world only consisted of blocks. 

Pretty good, at least for the over 140 million players who own the game today on all sorts of platforms.   In 2009 Notch released the Classic version of Minecraft. The success of the game lies in the immense freedom within a seemingly endless, randomly generated world that you can design yourself. 

So the sandbox title does not tell the player what to do, but gives them the options to do and leave what they want.   For a long time, Minecraft did not think of itself as a one-developer project. In 2010, Persson founded his own development studio with Mojang. And 2014 caused a stir after Microsoft bought Mojang for $ 2.5 billion!

Papers, Please (Lucas Pope) 

 


Lucas Pope was a developer at Naughty Dog, where he worked on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. In 2010, however, he decided to move to Japan with his wife, but then traveled regularly to Singapore and every now and then back to the US. 

And at the regular passport checks at the airport, he came up with a rather unusual idea for a game that ultimately turned to Papers, Please.   The title is set in the fictional dictatorship Arstotzka, where you as a border official decide who is allowed into the country and who has to stay outside.

Every day hundreds of people come to the post, but not every one of them has a valid passport. On top of that, the entry regulations are becoming stricter and more complex every day. And next to the problems of the immigrants and visitors are their own worries: The family must be cared for, for wrong decisions there are fines and the time pressure is always on the neck. 

Thus, Papers, Please is a unique experience that deliberately puts the player in uncomfortable situations and causes the concept of rules, freedom and limits to be questioned.

Undertale (Toby Fox) 

 


At first glance, Undertale is an ugly pixel RPG with strange monsters. At second glance, Undertale is one of the most creative and innovative games of recent years. The characters are consistently credible, the dialogues funny, direct and honest. 

The combat system thrives on its unique mechanics and even gives the player the choice of whether to kill or spare opponents. And then there is the driving soundtrack, which suits every situation perfectly. Except for individual drawings, the game is made by American composer and game designer Toby Fox. 

His inspiration for Undertale came from the JRPG series Mother, which is known under the name Earthbound. There are also quirky figures and mechanics who like to break with conventions. The game has built up a large fanbase. On Steam, around 95 percent of the more than 77,000 reviews are positive, on Metacritic the title rests on a rating of 92.

I already knew about the three of these games, and more: Stardew Valley (took him many years) & The Count Lucanor (probably, not sure.)

Undertale is amazing because of how it deconstructed the RPG tropes, Minecraft's popularity was because it had the right audience at the right time (in the age of internet) And haven't heard much about Paper's Please but its developers life had to do with it, Oh, and it had a lot of clones.

There are many games I know are made by one person but are less impressive (my games doesn't deserve to be mentioned here.)

The first two sentences you write about Undertale is what I think of it the first time I saw that game. Toby Fox write the game, made the assets, and even composed the dozens of the soundtracks all by himself. I suppose you could say.. he worked himself down to the bone!
