The goblins, unreal beings

Hello, dear readers.

Many years ago, a group of friends had the habit of sitting every night in a square to talk, play and joke. On several occasions, my grandmother had warned us not to be late in that square because according to her, El Niño appeared there. According to the stories told by my grandmother, El Niño was the soul of a child who had died without being baptized. Obviously no one believed in those stories and we thought that my grandmother was just trying to scare us into going home early. Until what my grandmother feared happened: the soul of El Niño appeared to us.

In Venezuela, to this type of spirits or soul that wander after death, they are considered goblins. The goblins are ghostly beings, smaller in size, who usually appropriate the places and who generally look for something, be it frightening, playing and even taking people to the afterlife. According to its purpose, there are naughty goblins, who cry, in love and even conservationists. Let's talk about them:

Playful goblins

Source

These ghosts are small, restless and pranksters and what they do is hide objects and make mischief to humans. They are also considered mocking spirits because they seem to have fun at the expense of the people. Normally they do not seek to frighten or are terrifying, they only seek to confuse. Normally, when some object is lost to us in a strange way, knowing that we have left it in a certain place and that it does not appear, people usually say that it is goblins, mocking spirits, that has hidden things. If you try to find it, you probably will not find it because the goblin will hide it for fun and want to see you worried. It is recommended that you ignore it and then the goblin will believe that you do not care about the object and it will appear. It is also said that if you want to chase away a naughty goblin, it is best to go to the bathroom eating. With this, supposedly, will stop following you.

Weeping goblins

Source

There are many legends that speak of this type of goblins. Many of the Venezuelan people know thousands of stories of weeping goblins. It is said that crying is one of the signs that give this type of ghosts. The people who have seen weeping goblins, have told that normally at night the crying of a child that can be seen mounted on the trees or on the roofs of the house is heard. They are small, they cry and they are dressed like children, covering their faces, but when they show their faces, they are old. It is said that they are spirits of children who died without receiving baptism, so it is recommended, in order to chase them away, to baptize them. This baptism consists of taking holy water (water blessed by a priest) in the place where the goblin appears and giving it a name, because supposedly so, when you say a prayer, you say the name and you can ask him to rest in peace.

In love goblins

Source

These goblins are usually the most dangerous. Normally these goblins look nice, of particular beauty and with some outstanding feature; that is, some say they have very beautiful eyes, others have a sweet voice and some say they have intoxicating aromas. With these unique and captivating characteristics, the pixie in love can, according to, caress people even if people do not see them. These goblins usually fall in love with their victims and visit them at night in the room. Many of the well-known stories talk about how they can get on top of people while they are asleep, and they can even try to drown them. Some beliefs say that when a goblin falls in love with a person, it dries it, makes it skinny and yellow, it's as if in each nocturnal visit, it took away a little bit of life. They also say that you should never give your name and if you want to chase it away, you should put a fish in the room. Supposedly they hate the smell of fish.

Conservationist goblins

Source

These goblins usually live in rivers, lagoons, forests, and are the guardians of nature. It is believed that all natural places have goblins that take care of the predatory hand of man. Normally they only act when they see that nature is stalked or hurt. It is said that in the lagoons of Mérida, this type of goblins abound, which can physically attack people if they see that they destroy nature; Some people even say that some tourists have been lost because they have dared to throw stones at the lagoons and this usually awakens the goblins, and they, out of revenge, have turned the landscape around and people have not found their way back. They say that there are many missing in the lagoons of Merida and all because the elves take care of those lands. As you can imagine, if you are not a predator of your environment and do not break the trees or dirty the waters, the goblins will remain asleep and will not hurt you.

These types of goblins that I just gave them are not the only ones, but they are the best known. It is believed that, although you can drive away some, others may come so it is always recommended to be forewarned and not to arouse their interest.

Going back to my initial story, one night, while laughing at a joke, we heard a child cry in the distance. It was a cry like a lament, one of those that make your skin bristle. We were all a little scared, but we kept chatting. The crying continued, but now it felt closer. In that we saw that a dog was beginning to bark towards the roof of one of the houses that were nearby. When we saw who the dog was barking at, we saw a small figure sitting on the roof. We all run to our homes. It is not necessary to say that more never we returned to that place and each time that we passed by there, we made a cross in our chest.

Hello, @nancybriti.
Coincidentally, I'm working on a story of goblins (as if to believe that there are no coincidences or, as they say in my village, "that they fly, they fly"). They are a particular type of species that live in the waters of rivers. In the state of Sucre, in eastern Venezuela, they are called "Encantados" (Enchanted), and they have their kingdom under the waters, and sometimes their cities emerge and become visible to some humans. They have their guardians, who guard the entrances of the caves that give access to their worlds; they have their conservatives and, like the globins in love that you describe, when they take someone, they are very dangerous.
I have enjoyed your text very much and it has been very enlightening for my work. Besides, I like this kind of themes a lot. Fantastic literature, in particular.
Thank you, receive a hug!

What a coincidence, @adncabrera. I know of your interest in fantastic literature. I think many Venezuelans are privileged because we were born listening to this kind of story and in our hands is not to forget. Thank you for always commenting! hugs.

Goblins are figures who have certainly nurtured the wonderful legends and tales of our peoples, anywhere in the world, receiving different names and qualities. Painting and cinema have taken advantage of them. They are undoubtedly linked to the rural world, in principle, although they may have moved to the urban, but cities inhabited by people coming from or influenced by that world. In Venezuelan literature, several writers have incorporated them into their stories, as in the case of Alfredo Armas Alfonzo and Orlando Araujo. There is a beautiful and interesting book of stories by an author from Cumaná (Venezuela), Jesús Torres Rivero, titled *Los encantados del agua^, which recreates those stories and imaginative consciousness.
Thank you for your gratifying and illustrative post, @nancybriti.

Venezuelan literature has many stories about these characters. Some stories even approach the figure of the elf as if they were ordinary ghosts. There are certain characteristics in these characters that make them fantastic and wonderful beings. Always grateful for your comment, @josemalavem.

I think ghosts are a product of our minds that are affected by fear. however, I believe there are creatures that exist in other dimensions with the form of ether and can change shapes like anything. When we are scared, and we have been informed of the form of a ghost, the astral creature will resemble what is on our mind. If we understand ghosts as Goblins, Dracula, Vampires or other forms, then our brains are naturally affected and these creatures will be transformed according to what we think.
but, beyond all that, there are good things that ancestors want to teach us. Value of mutual respect is developed without recognizing world boundaries. if everyone can respect each other, then we can live side by side without disturbing each other. When there is a ghost of a fun goblin, do not we panic trying to relax if there is something we are looking for not found. Acting as if we are not looking for it, with this calmness we will easily find it again.
tHANK YOU @nancybriti

It's always good to look for the rational side of things. Everything is in our mind. But I want to think that man sometimes doesn't have all the answers, and that there are still things inexplicable to him. Thank you for always commenting, @rokhani.

Such an adorable topic, thanks for posting! I love the pictures you´ve shared. Do you know the movie "Labyrinth" with David Bowie as the goblin king? All the characters in the movie seem to be heavily inspired by your first image...

I don't know the movie, @patschwork. But I'm sure I'll look for it to see. Thank you for commenting.

After some research I found out that this picture is created by Brian Froud who did the concept artwork for the movie. So...it's no coincident the picture reminds me of it :)
It's a great fantasy movie from the late 80s, hope you enjoy it!
